i have a mariner 75hp motor that i dont know if the impeller has ever been changed,,has a good stream of water coming out the tube but was told if it hadnt been changed it needs it..how hard of a job is this and does anyone have a link to how this is done...thanks

I may be wrong but I think Mariner is made by Mercury?? I think I had heard that some time back. It is ironic you asked though. I have never turned a bolt on a boat motor until this evening and it was to replace an impeller for a lady that her husband had passed away and she is going to sell the boat. The motor is a 05 50 HP Mercury. Anyway, there are 4 bolts that you should be able to see & maybe a rubber plug at the rear of the foot where you could get to it & take it off. On this 50 HP Merc, you have to back off a set screw higher up on the front of the motor to completely release the foot where you can get to the impeller. There are 4 screws in the case that holds the impeller in place. It has gaskets in both top & bottom of it.

That is as far as I have gotten as I don't have the impeller to replace it with. I have probably an hour in the job. If someone has any mechanical ability & watch what they are doing, it isn't bad. I hear the impellers are about $30 & cost at least 2 hours labor that is usually pretty high. Man I hope this helps you out in some way.

Most Mariners are just Mercury's painted gray. Some early 80's are referred to as Japanese as they are built totally different and made overseas. Some of the newer like the 05 are Yamaha based and the shifter linkage is a turn buckle instead of the Mercury "slide" on linkage. Post the serial number and if I have the service manual covering it, I will send you the section covering replacement of the pump.

Actually a 1990. PM me your email address and I will send you the section on the gearcase that will explain how to change it.

Hi James. Sounds like you know these things in & out. Question, what do I need when I go get the stuff I need to put my impeller back in? Just the impeller & gaskets? I saw some kits on line but can't order them because I'm not a dealer. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. The one I am working on is a 05 50HP ELPTO.

All you need is the 2 gaskets and the impeller. You can purchase these from www.boats.net and they give youa discount and are fair on shipping.</p>

I can vouch for Boats.net. They stock some really obscure parts. They're great at what they do, have a huge warehouse, and as Jame said, are reasonable on shipping.
