in dash depthfinder

I have a '96 stratos 201 pro it has an old,out of date half workinin depth finder mounted from the factory in dash its 5"x5" has any one took on of this out and replaced it with something like a humminbird 788 measures 5.4"hx6.9"w? can it be done, is it hard, do you have to take the dash out, looks hard to get the old one out. any advise would i would be thankful for.

rattletrap i got a 03 stratos 21xl pro star,i was wondering the same thing,not sure if i'm gonna replace the 2 x65's i got or just go ahead and sell my 4800 and 4900 global maps and get two hds units?i''ve had my dash out ,is no big deal,everythings mounted to dash as a assy.it's fairly easy to access the brackets that hold the unit in,there might be something on bass boat central {BBC}i've owned a few boats and always have used nothing but lowrance units with no problems,but the new hd units with side and down image from h-bird are nice are a whole bunch cheaper?
