Re: In the woods with Catfinger N Bent Rod
Well, about 5 minutes after my first post, Bent Rod decided to leave his stand and walk a little. 3 Minutes later he was blasting away at two deer, knocking one of them down, and scaring the bejesus out of the second deer with hot flying lead. While he was trying to call me to tell me what happened Storm said she sees deer in front of us, and there were 5 walking up the hill at an angle. They were at least 150 yards or more up and across the holler, so I elected myself sniper today. I had a big doe in the scope for about 30 seconds, but her vitals were blocked by a big tree. When she moved, she disappeared in the bush. I saw another a moment later coming down the hill, and then turned and angled back up. I got on her, and squeezed off a shot. I felt like I was on her, but she ran about 20 yards sorta up hill, so I fired again. I felt I pulled this shot, and she was no-where to be seen. We were hoping for another shot at one of the other deer, but it never materialized. I called Rick to hear, he had one down, and he came to help look for mine. It is very hard to pinpoint where you shot at a deer several hundred yards away, across a large holler, in a clear-cut. We stumbled around for a while, and found blood! We had a good trail to follow, and then found the second shot because of all the hair, so now I am feeling good about this. Two hits with a .300, and blood all over the place. We ended up trailing diminishing blood for about 1.5 hours, and 500 yards or more, through some of the nastiest thickets you can imagine, before it just stopped and she was never found. I am at a loss.... I will tell you Ol' Bent Rod is one hell of a tracker, he found blood several times when I was ready to give up. Sometimes, it just happens even to the best of us, (which I am not). I guess the coyote's have to eat also right?? We then went after Rick's deer. After climbing up the mountain, (why didn't he shoot one at the bottom???,) We were steering her down the hill, I say steering, because it was so stinking steep where she was laying. I can tell you again, Rick is an unreal shot, as it was about 300+ yards, through brush, and only using a 2.5 power scope, and he drilled her, and it was an instant kill! emoWorthy emoEek She is a beast too, I am guessing well over 100lb fat healthy doe. All-in-all a great day in the woods, and brought some meat out of the wild as well. Gotta love God's blessings. emoGeezer
