I am considering purchasing an inflatable life vest for use on the water. I have priced a few and would like to keep it around $100-$150. I have seen some well above $200, and on a teacher's salary, that is steep.

I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations about them. I have heard some cautionary tales of heavy rain setting them off, but I don’t know this to be fact.

I am considering the auto-inflatable, in the event I go overboard, hit my head and cannot operate it manually.

I doubt I will use it kayaking, but I would not rule it out.

Thanks for any/all comments and suggestions.

Don't use an inflatable kayaking. Every time they get damp a small part of the carbon will erode. Finally they will set off. By lot s of re-arm kits you will need them.

If you are going to bite the bullet and buy an auto inflatable, spend the extra bucks and get one with HIT. Mustang is the only one I know of but a store brand that has it is a possibility. I had one with the alka selzer like wafers and they will cost you a small fortune in re-arm kits. If you fish around a dam or other dangerous waters, that require a "worn"PFD, you should have an inflatable, due to the fact it won't burn you up in the summer heat. If you insist on the water soluable wafer vests, keep it inside and dry, when not in use. If you buy a Mustang HIT, verify the exp. date on the inflator. They're good for 5 years. That does NOT mean 5 years from date of purchase.

Get a hydrostatic, where water pressure sets it off rather than the dissolvable pill type (where moisture can cause premature inflation). The hydrostatic cost more, but IMO is the only way to go.
