First, let me say thank you for the input on measuring the steering cables. I have the new cables and I have the cables pulled to the enging. My problem is that the inside tilt tube is 11" from the hole the cables come through the boat and the rod is 13". The angle is too much to get the rod started in the rear tilt tube. My boat is a Skeeter SX190 with a 150 HPDI. I do not have a jack plate. The engine is bolt directly to the transom. My question is can I set the engine on the skag, loosen the nuts holding the engine and tilt/skew the engine in order to get the rod started? If I can not tilt the engine enough, will I need to remove the engine to install the steering cables? Your know and experience has been a big help to me. Thank you in advance for your input. emoGrouphug

Like hippi97 said, Some engines will have to come off and you will need to seal it again. Don't loosen it and then tighten it or you may allow water into the transom from the broken seal. It will need to swing clear of the boat so you can clean the old silicone off and install new. You take toooooooo much risk by letting it support itself by the skeg. If it breaks, it will cost you more money. Just my .02
