I sometimes use shiners and fish fairly deep on drops for bass. I have seen this bobber in the news and decided to order one and see how it works. It is supposed to put the bait down to the bottom of the lake, then fill with water and pull it up about 6 inches so it is floating just off the bottom. I thought it might be just the thing for cat fish and bass. I'll let everyone know how it works.

You know I had some real doubts about this thing but I just got back from the lake and I have to say it has a lot of promise. The wind was horrible on the upper end of the chick so I couldn't really test it the way I wanted to BUT I did manage to snag a couple of cats even with the gale that was blwoing in! I rigged the thing a little different than they say you are supposed to but it worked just like they said. I'd cast it out, it would lay on it's side until the weight hit the bottom, then it would raise right up. If you were bank fishing or fishing from a stationary or slowly moving boat it would be an amazing thing to have to get down really deep. Because of the wind I was only fishing it in about 10 feet of water on a little drop using shiners. I managed a couple of small channel cats before the wind got so bad that it drove me off the spot. It was wild watching how sensitive it was in 10 foot of water! The least little nibble and the thing would lay over on it's side. But you CANNOT use this thing with a drifting boat. The weight of the bobber will simply cause the bobber to sink as it is being pulled along. The bobber contains a magnet, the brain (a ball bearing) and then the body which fills with water and sinks it until just the foam is sticking up. Wind does not move it at all.

That really is different! Keep us informed as to how it works in the future. Does it add much weight to the feel or when you're retrieving it or fighting a fish? Thanks!

Eric the water drains out and there is no difference at all when fighting a fish. As a matter of fact you actually feel the fight more than you do using a regular bobber because it is a slip bobber and the line moves freely through it. I'll let you know how it works out. So far I'm pretty impressed.

Thanks for posting that FF. Sounds like a great concept - Does it adjust the height of the bait maintaining a short distance off the bottom as the depth changes from say 25 up to 20 and then to 30ft? I am wondering how it might work with a 1oz sinker in 50ft?

David it will bring the bait off the bottom about a foot to 2 feet. What I do is put the line through the bobber, tie my hook on and THEN in the eyelet of the hook I attach another piece of light mono line with the weight on it. That way I can adjust the depth the bait is from the bottom by simply making the mono longer or shorter. The bobber always drops the weight to the bottom (100 feet if need be) and the minute the weight (not the bait) hits bottom it begins to fill with water, the magnet rolls to the end and locks the line and the bobber stands straight up lifting the line and bait taunt with just the weight touching bottom. If a fish takes the bait he doesn't pull the bobber under, it simply lays on it's side and let's the line run through it until you set the hook. You always know you have a fish because the bobber lays over on it's side which helps with the light bites. The other reason for using the light mono is if I get into rocks or whatever I can simply break the mono and 90% of the time only have to tie a weight back on. I bought mine off eBay and managed the two cats yesterday before the wind got up. I think it would be amazing to use at the nuke plant, or for staging bass like EricM has been catching. Really any type fishing where you have to present a live bait deep.

I read about those last year. I thought it was pretty interesting and meant to find one to try .. but never got around to it. I'm glad someone checked it out .. and now I might just have to invest in one of those fishing gizzmos. There's a video out on the net .. I'll see if I can find the link.

:)
