I have lived here for three years and like clock work about this time each year the crappie fishing really gets good. I saw your post Drumking and I hate to say it for your sake but I had a great day!emoParty I got out to get the paper this morning and it was just cool, over cast and cloudy and I swear I heard the crappie calling my name down at the lake. I just had to go and try it. Seems like on days like today they will bite. Got on the water out of Wolftever ramp at around 8. Started off using one red/chartruse and one black/chartuuse tube about 12 inches apart. The water was very stained but they were there. Caught about seven in the first 15 minutes and every one of them hit the black /chartruse so I changed the other to that color as well. A couple guys got close enough to talk to me and one of them said," There should be a law against you catching them like that."emoLaugh They watched me a little longer and finally had to ask,"What thet H*@L are you doing and we are not!"emoLaugh I was casting it out and counting to 10/1000 and then just pumping the jigs in. They were hitting them well. They seemed to be suspended in about 20 feet of water. There was a lot of shad around and when I cleaned them they were stuffed. When I had 24 keepers 2jigs showed up and fished the last couple hours with me. I tried to train him but he just could not get them in.emoPoke I know he had at least three on, one got him hung up, one came off coming to the boat, and one came off at the boat. I caught about 10 or so more and finished out my limit. He was a good netter.emoThumbsup In all I bet I boated somewhere around 100 crappie and had a nice limit of 30 slabs. 2jigs took pictures he was so impressed by the looks of them. He said he would post them later. I have not had that much fun in a while, time to go drown a minner and chunk a crappie tube there everyone.emoToast Jmax

Now Now, Jimmy Boy............. A hundred:eek:  Let's not get carried away. Yes you did have 31 keepers. And good fish but while I was in the boat for an hour & a half, you only had about 10-12 crappie & a drum & the drum don't countemoUpsmile emoUpsmile I'll have to get out my deep sea rig to crappie fish with youemoTongue emoTongue I'll take a rematchemoToast.

Somebody please make note of this day for the history books... Jmax caught crappie and drumking didn't. emoScratch emoEek emoScratch emoEek No doubt the moon and the stars and the sun have realigned in some unbeknownst configuration we may never see again in our lifetime. And here I am headed to Reelfoot Lake (after a little fish attractor work) to hunt for ducks that are resting on their laurels in Illinois and Missouri. emoBawl

Ooch! I am truely hurt.emoBawl 2Jigs who has known me a while now doesn't sound like he believes me.emoDoh I will say the bite was a lot better yesterday morning and the truth be known I am about to go back this morning.(Had too much fun.) They did slow down quite a bit around noon but still were consistent. I will say the 100 is a guess but the way I came up with that was it is fair to say I had 1 keeper to every 2 to 3 non keepers. There are a lot of non keepers which I like because it tells me there is a good future crop on the Chick. Anyways, if you do the math I had 31 keepers and that means I let go somewhere around 62 to 93 non -keepers. I did not keep track of the accual number however lets just say I caught a LOT! One reason I also did not catch any more with 2jigs than I did was I was holding back as to not make him feel too bad. Heck I did everything but bring his fish in for him. Gave him the baits, he didn't have black/chartruse, showed him how to rig it up, showed him where to catch them and showed him how to set the hook and reel them in. Heck, what are friend for?emoTongue emoPoke emoEvil I may never go crappie fishing with you again 2jigs because you may beat me next time and I will have h@*l to pay.emoLaugh Jmax

2jigs you are gonna be busy rematching Jmax, rematching drumking and smokin' me. emoLaugh You will have to get a bigger freezer to hold all the fish.

I believe you Jmax! I think that the huge, and I mean huge number of fish that I was marking coming in and out of the WT creek bridge were mostly crappies. There are huge numbers of fish that you can mark in the water column along with large schools of bait just inside the creek at Wolftever bridge, on the flat in front of the ramp and in the channel on the opposite side. These fish look to be suspended in the 6-8 foot range and that would correlate witht the depth that Jmax is fishing with a ten count with 12 lb test. With 4 lb test I would expect more like a 5-6 second count. It's open water fishing for sure and I can't say that I'm the best at that, I just feel better throwing at a cover element for crappies. I would expect that if one trolled or just floated with the wind accross from WT bridge to the first bend in the creek that you one would catch lots of fish. The bait is thick right there between the bridge and the first bend in the creek and with a spider set up I would expect a limit quickly. Now I also went back and forth accross the creek outside the bridge in Harrison bay the last time I was out and there are good numbers of some fish on the edges of the creek in the 20 to 22 foot range with the channel being 25 to 26 feet deep. I would wager that if one knew how to fish vertically along the drop into the creek and stay along that edge that he could clean up with bigger crappies than the ones that Jmax was catching, maybe I'm wrong but I would expect with the huge numbers of bait that are at the creek mouth there that crappies and other predators are thick there too, just too easy to get a full belly. Just like in bass fishing the bigger crappies are probably in the areas that take more boat control and good electronics to stay on them. I would expect that the deeper fish along the channel are catfish bigger crappies and bass. Somebody try it out and let us know.

Good report Jmax. Sounds like a great day. 2jigs is a very competitive guy, he will find a way to compete I'm sure. Sounds like Jmax has their number right now. emoHungry

I saw you out there the other day, Jmax. I haven't fished that place very much. Almost never as a matter of fact. Sounds like I need to go there from time to time before they all leave. I stayed in the river where there was a lot of current and playing with a 1/4 oz jigging spoon. Caught a few, but not as many as one would like. I was surprised that I didn't catch any bass while out there. Just crappie, bluegill and white bass. emoGeezer

Jmax your next post will be number 2000. I remember when you were a new member, I had been one only a couple days. Boy how time truly does fly.

I am thinking SOMETHING was up in the last few days. Both Wednesday and Friday nights coming home from work at 5:30ish I have seen FLOCKS of gulls near the Wolftever bridge. I'm mean hundreds! They were feasting on fish I'm sure and below those fish were probably some great keepers. I didn't have my pole or my lures in the car so I didn't stop to see what was going on .. but it sure made me wish I could have.

I hope I can get out there Monday but the weather reports I'm hearing just don't sound good. Way to go JMax ... sounds like a VERY fun day.

Well gang I am going to tell on myself.:( I went back yesterday all excited at the thought of doing it again and they were not hiting????????? I do not know why and only managed to put three in the boat. Polo and his partner showed up and they looked to fair a little better but not much. I guess if someone ever figures out the difference between Friday and Saturday and 100 crappie compared to 3 let me know.emoBang In some way I am glad because there was sure a lot of people out there trying and no one I saw was figuring them out. I at least know they are there and hope to hit them right again soon. Keep them wet gang!emoCool Jmax
