I just recently bought a 2006 21' Stratos with a 2006 Yamaha 250 on it. When I bought the boat the original owner told me that he thought the jack plate needed some fluid. I got the boat for a steal and figured it wouldn be too much trouble to add some oil to it. The Jack Plate is a Detwiler and is the all-in-one model where the motor and pump are part of the jack plate itself (not in battery compartment). When I turn the dial to try to raise or lower the motor, I can hear the motor or pump turning, but the outboard motor doesn move. After letting it run for a few seconds it kind of sounds like it might be cavitating or have some air trapped in it. I'm not sure if maybe it needs some fluid, or needs to be bled, or what. If anybody has any ideas or has dealt with similar issue, any advise would be appreciated. I can't visually seem to find where you would even add fluid.

Sounds like it may be low. You might do a search on the plate and find a owners manual in pdf or contact the company and see if they will email you it. I have never delt with those just the ones with the pump in the boat.

Then the question arises...If the fluid is low, where did it go???

Yeah, go Auburn, but lets focus on the jack plate! LOL Thanks for the info, tried to look up the owners manual on the net the other day with no luck. Gonna have to call em i guess

Sounds to me like it's low on fluid. You can add fluid to those detwiler jackplates we have worked on them before. I had a buddy who bought one and it was out of fluid and would not go up he thought the motor was burned up but just needed fluid.

On the right side of the jackplate there will be a cap that you loosen it's normally yellow in color thats where you add and check the fluid. It will probally be easier to access with the motor trimmed all the way up. It might not be bright yellow due to fading if you have any problems just pm me.

sorry for the comment out of left field....i was bored at work... when you look for that place to add fluid, see if you find 2 new deep cycle batteries for me....

oh, and war eagle...

And maybe i will find a roll of carpet too for whoever has been playing tackle football in your boat with ice skates on! /!\

Thanks Bumble bee! I'll definitely try that when I get home from work in the morning! I couldn't believe that i couldn't find any info about adding fluid on the net
