I took my new to me 1989 Ranger out for a few hours around Wolftever/HBSP this past saturday. MAN IM HAPPY WITH MY PURCHASE! Will redo carpet, seats, dash, windshields, wiring, and tubing. At least thats the 5 year plan. But my question is about adding a jack plate. Seems like boat took a little long to get on plane (i didnt really run WOT and Im assuming that contributed) and after planing out, i would bounce a little sometimes. I would play with the trim and flatten it out, but not every time. So my question is, would a jack plate help with planing out quicker and the bouncing? Bouncing wasnt bad, just rather ride smooth. Haha. And if a jack plate is the answer, where and what do you recommend?

I would learn the characteristics of the boat first. Check the prop to pad measurement, as already mentioned the prop.... look at set up tips on Bass Boat Central a lot of info. Never will go wrong with a jack plate. Again look at the BBC recommended settings. Enjoy

Be sure to start out with the trim all the way down. Trim up slowly as you plane out. Usually the bouncing comes from too much trim up with the amount of power you are applying. A little seat time will go a long way.

I had it trimmed all the way down on take off. Then would play with trimming up when I got on plane. I dont know the prop pitch. Will have to check tonight. But i do know its 4 blades stainless steel and doesnt seem to have any nicks or bends in it. Guy I bought it from said it was a $300-$400 prop. You guys prefer a 3 or 4 blade props? I NEED more time on the water with her. So we can get to know each other a little better. Haha

talk to ditchdoc666 on here he has a older ranger.he maybe be able to help you or at least tell you what he is running on his.

Hey Danny,pm me with what model boat motor, and boat you have and we will go from there, have set up many Rangers with Wreching and prob can help you, also measure your prop to pad measurement how it's set up now and we will get you fixed up,Taylor

I added a jackplate to my Ranger after we moved back to Chattanooga, and got a longer garage. I experimented with different props first to get the best I could from my boat. The jackplate helped add some speed, though not a lot, and helped the holeshot, some. I don't trim much till I am past 4K rpm, so the rig is on plane, then I add throttle and trim till I am at my desired speed . Running a three blade, with a little extra cup ,from Dan's prop shop in Soddy. Fish n' Fun installed my plate.

So I took the boat out this past Sunday. Got on plane fine. At WOT i was spinning the prop at 5000 RPMs. Its a shooter 13 1/4 and 25 pitch. Shouldnt i be spinning closer to 6000 RPMs? If so, what prop do you guys suggest I try?

The johnson Gt needs to be between 5500 and 6000 rpm. Yours may or may not have a limiter at 5850 rpms. A foil is your best bet for fixing the hopping. A jackplate will allow you to utilize that bigger prop and run it in the correct rpms. I wanna say i have heard an 8 in jp and around 3 in below pad?
