I have ordered a bigger jackplate for my boat. How hard is it to switch the plates? I know how to take the motor off and all that but don't know how hard it is to switch the plates. I thought it would be pretty easy but I called superior marine and they said it would cost me 3-400 bucks?!

BS

You can do it if you have something to raise the motor or hold it up a little after you take the bolts out.. Get some help, an eye bolt for the flywheel on your motor, and a winch or hoist..

I don't see how it could cost that much. Heck, all that holds it on are some screws and silicon. I'd check with Tom at FishnFun.

Things are not often as easy as they seem. If you drop the motor, 400 dollars will seem cheap. If you take it to a professional, they are responsible for leaks and any possible damage. You didn't say what plate you were switching to, but if it is hydraulic, that is a big difference in labor time...(wires and hoses, etc.) also consider set up time, to get the motor in alignment with the boat....time you could be fishing......

The one coming off is a 6" slidemaster and the one going on is a heavy duty 10" rapid jack. My dad is a veteran industrial mechanic and I believe we can handle it. The slidemaster is already sold.

Beetlespin, before you go to tearing it out. Make sure you measure the cables and hoses for length. If you have a good support system for the motor it ain't too bad a job.

I swapped mine out and it wasn't too big a job. Just make sure you clean and caulk the holes good and around the edges of the new plate when you install it. Torque the bolts to a min. of 85 ft lbs. And be sure to use good washers. After running the boat for awhile go back and retorque the bolts again.

Just un bolting and rebolting with my motor get a good cherry picker and depending on how big your motor is you may want to put some extra wieght on there
