Well I got my order from Cabaleas today and while I was working on some of the I decided to take a pic to show how I modify the spoons. The picture below is of the 3/8 oz which comes will a small treble hook which is waaaay under sized. After much trail and error I have found that a drop shot hook works very well on these spoons. Part of the issue with catch fish on jigging spoons is keeping the fish on. The spoons have so much weight that the fish can thow the spoons with ease. This is where the larger J style hooks work to hold better than the smaller trebles. Also I have started adding a split ring which also allows for better movement of the spoons and is susposted to keep fish from throwing it.

Good ideas! I'm guessing a 4/0 wide gap? I wouldn't take all of the new spoons with me at one time - might make the boat list.emoBigsmile

Have you considered adding a hook on the other end where you added the split ring? Are you casting and winding these things or dropping and actually jigging?

Jigging. I watched the BassPros and Jason Quin would run his line througth the eye of the spoon and tie to a treble. Basically the spoon was free to run up and down the line and he basically had two hooks. Not tried it as for what we do we would probably loose twice as many spoons but it worked for him as he was catching suspended fish.

Thank you for posting this info! I have been using to a cross-link snap in place of the split ring. A couple more questions....Is that a Gammy DS hook? What size(s) are you using for different weight spoons? Thanks again!

Great idea on upsizing the hook. If you're jigging for suspended fish and not around heavy cover this rig can add a few more to the boat that just swipe at the bait during the fall.

Good question. I bought these finese hooks (They are Gamakatsu) for fishing Power Minnons. I decided they would work great on the jigging spoons. The spoon in the pic is 3/8 oz so you should be able to get an idea what the hook size is. I don't remember what size they are. Probably a nickel would fit into the gap on the hook.

This "freestyle jigging method" is hot right now, so I have read. I think it would limit the number of fish that throw the bait.</p>

Good info, I've been using the BPS strata spoons and the hooks on those are terrible. Been replacing them with Gamakatsu trebles but like your idea of the single hook. I picked up some war eagle spoons the other day, they look pretty nice and come with gamy trebles - haven't tried them yet.

Disregard my last post on the pic of all the spoons, I see now that you get them from Cabelas. I found them there but was afraid to make an order because by the time I start throwing everything else in that I "need" it always costs me a couple big bills...
