I have not posted in a week or so. Not been going much due to the heat. Jerry who owns Cutthroat Lures and who has sponsored me and donated to some of our tournaments has been asking to hook up with me so yesterday was the day. Overcast made it a little less hot and had a breeze come up about mid morning. Work for me was slow yesterday and I only had a couple I had to follow up with. Got that done early and headed for the lake to meet up with Jerry.
This time of year the grass on the Chick starts to top out. It really starts to thicken up and it seems to me the bass begin to migrate shallow out of the deep where they have been living since the spawn. It kind of reminds me of the early spring where the bass are migrating from the deep winter locations to the spawning areas. I told Jerry we were going to put that thought to the test.
Using top water baits and Cutthroat Buzz baits we headed for the shallow flats along the River. It did not take long to find them. Second stop we boated six bass on top in the grass. Including a four, a three and a half and a two and a half. emoThumbsup The other three were short. We missed as many as we hooked up with. Once we found those it was just a matter of thinking about places like that and heading there to repeat that process. Had a fun morning. emoToast Boated somewhere around 17 bass with five keepers. Jerry did hook up with the biggest of the day, got it out of the grass coming to the boat, it was right there with me stretching to net it and his hooks came out. emoDoh I know it was bigger then the four I had caught so I am guessing somewhere between four and a half and five. Got the fun out of her getting to see her explode on top, fight her in and see her right there out of reach. Not being in a tournament made it somewhat better on the lose. Still would have liked to of touched her. Those best five were the four, a couple three's and a couple two's. So about 15 1/2 to 16 pounds. Not bad for shallow bass fishing. It will not be long before the frog bite turns on in full force. Had not found any active matts yet, need those bream to start the snap, crackle and pop.
About noon decided to head for deep water and see if that bite was still there too. Using shakes, cranks and Cutthroat Jigs started hitting drops and ledges. Put another nine bass in the boat with another five keepers and four shorts. I also had one break off on the hook set and one get me hung up and it broke off. emoRolleyes Out of the five keepers there were two three pounders and three two's. About 13 to 13 1/2 pounds. If I had been in a tournament the two three's and what I had that morning would have put me up to about 17 to 18 lbs. with the best five. Not a killer bag but decent. emoBigsmile
Even now I was talking with Derek and we have no idea what we are going to do this weekend. The CBA is Saturday. Hard to decide if we should go deep or shallow. The choice could be the difference between a check and just an "At-a-boy". No matter what happens I am just thankful to be bless enough to be able to participate and enjoy what God has blessed us with. emoAngel
Hope to see you there! emoAngler Jmax
