Went out this afternoon for a couple hours to see what was up with the lake for this coming CBA weekend. It was extremely windy and in some areas very strong with waves. A couple of my spots I wanted to try were just too windy and too hard to fish. It as tough, I hope it was with the front going through this weekend, a cold front last night and blue bird sky today. I threw everything at them and never found any consistent pattern. I managed eight bass in the boat and five would keep. Two nice ones at 4/6 and 3/9 that were LM. Then had two other LM just barely keepers and a pound and a half spot. Would have been about 13.5 lbs. Not good but it could have been worse. Caught them from 5 foot to 15 foot. Tried a little shallow but the real shallow stuff did not produce for me today.

I did have a strange thing happen today that would never in a million years happen again I would guess. I had my hat pulled down and was looking forward. Made a long looping cast and my line took off to the left in mid air. Startled I looked up to see two mallards fairly low had just pass over me and the hen had been hooked by my bait in mid air. emoEek I engaged the reel and the line tightened. She folded like she had been shot. Down she came to a big splash. I reeled her in and the fight was on. After she crapped all over my boat emoMad I finally got hold of her and got her under control. The hook was not actually in her flesh but had got her wing real good and the line had wrapped with the hook holding it in place. Got her undone and off she flew cussing at me the whole way. emoBigsmile Jmax

I've done it with herons below the Dam more than once... but a mallard is a much smaller target. emoThumbsup

Nice! I almost did that with one of the herons at river park. I'd tossed a lure out and it flew through and ran into the line. The line drug on it's wing and went far enough to pull the spoon and weight out of the water. Thankfully the line slipped off the wing before the hook got to it. I don't want to think about unhooking one of those things.

Yea, I have had a couple close calls with Herons also on the bank, but never a duck in flight. Because I had my hat on I did not even see them going over head until it got her. I could not have done that if I had tried. :( New sport, duck fishing. Between a snake falling out of a tree onto my trolling motor and then sliding off the water side and the duck in flight I had a weird couple of hours. Jmax

You don't want to foul (fowl) hook a gull either. They are worse than herons to get off. They will peck you do death while you are rescuing them. Grab a Heron by the beak and it will be as docile as a lamb. emoBigsmile emoGeezer
