It has been a while since I have taken out a young person to fish and talk about fishing. I had thought it would be good to do so again. These youths are the future of our sport. I did not have anything going on and felt I needed to participate. Called Shane up and he paired me up with these two young men. emoThumbsup After my trip out with Jerry Breeden on Tuesday afternoon and catching our best three at 16 lbs I was excited at the potential of what these two guys might do. Neither of these young men were rookies in my opinion. They might not have fished quite as heavily as we did with a shakey but they picked it up quickly. I tried to explain why we were where we were as we went with the bass mostly in a pre-spawn pattern. They were great listeners and seemed to soak it up.

Targeting primary and secondary points leading back into spawning flats is how we started and how we finished. I had told them to bring a crank rod and a shakey rod. We started with the shakey rods and they never put them down. emoBigsmile Most of their fish came from 3 to 10 feet where the drops into deeper water occurred as you would come out of a spawning flat or bay. They had numerous hits in which the bass were just lightly tapping their shakey and it made it very hard for them to tell with the hurricane force winds we were dealing with. In one stretch the waves and water was splashing over the front of the boat so it was pretty rough trying to fish it with those conditions. Still with all that said they did a great job. emoThumbsup We had five solid keepers come into the boat with one near four and a couple other solid mid twos. They also boated some shorts.

Davy had the big fish of our trip on but I will tell you he is a big fella with a lot of power. emoBigsmile Just about skied a six pounder across the water with 12 lb fluorocarbon on. emoEek The bass still had a lot of fight in it and I was telling him to slow down. I had the net in the water by the side of the boat ready to net it but she had other ideas. She made one pass by about three foot deep, then went under the boat. Davy had slowed down, when she came out she came out fast and blew right by me bull dogging all the way. When you have a 200 lb force pulling at one end and a six pound force pulling at the other end swimming for all it is worth, the drag not letting off, something has to give and it did. Line snapped like some 22 rifle had been fired. emoBang It really knocked the wind out of our sails. I wished I had tried to net it the first pass after seeing the end results. Hind sight is always 20/20. That one cost us. It happens.

They still had a nice weight and ended up 19th out of the 226 boats that were in it. I enjoyed fishing in my boat with Kaleb and Davy. I wish them many more successful trips in the future. Here is Davy and Kaleb getting their 19th placement. emoToast Jmax

I told the boys to learn as much as they could. The real gem for yesterday was getting to learn. That's how you become better. Thank you so much for taking time to sow into there lives. Both boys talked and talked about there trip with you at dinner last night. They laughed about the bird pooping on Kaleb...??. They told me that Jmax is very knowledgable about bass fishing! They soaked it up!

emoUpsmile Yea, leave it up to two high school young men to remember the poop. emoLaugh Don't know when we got bombed but Kaleb got the most on his life jacket, second most was on my shoe and then it was scattered on the seats and my console. Some sneaky bird got us good. emoBigsmile I mentioned the show were Bill Dance has that happened to him and got them laughing. They had seen that one too. emoLaugh Jmax
