I had said I just wanted to catch a limit on this one and come in with at least 15 lbs. I usually do not do well in Feb. and March. Went out pre fishing both Tues and Thurs for a little while and Tues had 23 lbs and Weds had only three keepers that went 10 lbs. I was worried I would repeat my last couple years on the first one and stink. We talked about our plans and decided to try the less traveled areas and shoot for a limit with points and not really go for the kill. We really did not think we had a prayer to win so that was not as hard a decision as it sounded.
Started out slow for us mostly fishing shallow flats, we could not buy a bite on traps and cranks. We saw a guy catch a five, a three and a 2.5 doing what we were doing. emoScratch Then had Anthony and Heyley Carrol come in by us to talk and fish near while we shot the bull. Anthony rears back and sets the hook on a 4 doing what we were doing and us sitting there talking to him. emoDoh You ever feel you are jinxed in a given month? That was me! emoRolleyes
We got out of there before I threw all my stuff overboard in disgust. I thought since nothing normal for this time of year would work I might as well just go for a small limit and we picked up.....you guessed it....the shakey. About an hour later we had five fish in the boat but only two small keepers. The sun broke out and we decided to try to hit some long flats and ditches that were high ways for bass on the move towards spawning flats where they might be feeding up. Fishing mostly in about 8 to 12 feet we drilled areas with worms, jigs, T-rigs and traps. Derek managed two three pounders and we said if we could only catch a kicker we would have our respectable limit and not be embarrassed to weigh in. Next thing I know my t-rig loaded up and stopped. I could feel it kind of roll and told Derek I think I got a big cat. Still playing it safe I worked it in and we saw a big bass pulling down. Got the net under it and she went 7/1. emoThumbsup Mission accomplished. Shortly after that one Derek did the same thing and the rod loaded up. It headed for deeper water and we thought we were going to do a repeat. It was not meant to be, a few turns of his reel and it just came off. emoBadLanguage Try as we did we only managed one more keeper that would cull up and we ended the day out with two three & a halfers, two two & a quarters and the one seven for 18.36 pounds. Nothing compared to the top twenty which took over twenty pounds to be in but we were happy. Ended up in 32 nd place and there was a few white cards ahead of us which do not count towards points so we should end up with some decent points for this one.
All in all a good end to the day for us and seeing all those big bass was worth the trip to the weigh in. It was one of the best crowds I have seen at a CBA weigh in. emoToast
Congrats to Neal and Rogne on a outstanding win with almost 38 lbs and all those who placed in the top 14 places that got a check, it took over 26 lbs to be in the money on this one. emoApplause Jmax
