Could not decide what tournament to fish. It really finally boiled down to the fact that I get to fish the CFFs for free emoBigsmile and have to pay $120.00 to fish the CBAs. James and I had a pretty darn good day. We had fish at every place we stopped. Slow but very consistent. Never found a mother load but kept catching one or two every fifteen to thirty minutes. It kept us focused and made the day go by fast. Had a 15 inch squeaker right off on a shakey about my fifth cast of the morning. Kept moving around, got a hard thump right under the boat just when I was about to reel it up. Double checked it and it was moving. emoThumbsup Drove it home and the rod just bowed over. Shouted at James it was a good one and to get the net. Fight was on, three bull dog runs, a couple jumps, a little drag pulling and up came our best of the day that weighed 8.68 on the CFF scales. emoDance I knew then we might get a check. Messed around there a little longer and got another thump, set the hook and up came a nice spot that was 1/14. I knew if we were going to think about winning we needed to get rid of both of those little ones. emoScratch Not too long after that I had another good hit, set the hook and the fight was on again. Told James again to get the net and up came a nice one about 4 to 4 and a half, fought it to the boat and it did a hard bull dog on me under the boat. I think I must have gotten a nick in my line because the next thing I know my line broke. Made us sick and I just knew it would cost us the tournament.

Made several moves and kept boating shorts. Finally I got a large mouth that was 2 and a half so out went the 15 inch squeaker. All we could catch them on was shakeys and t-rigs. I did catch one on a crank but that was out of a lot of bass. We just kept moving and I think I must have hit every piece of trash and rock I could think of at this end trying to upgrade. Got another two and a halfer so the spot went next. I think we caught at least a dozen keeper large mouth between 1/13 and two and a half. We just could not find another good one. Finally about one o'clock we made another move to an under water ledge of rock. My line got mushy and I stopped to just watch it. All by itself it just went slack. Reared back and put the metal to her and again it was a good one. James got the net under her and she was a big size bass but skinny as a rail. Large spawned out female. Weighed right at four. Made one more move and caught one more bass that would not help. Had to go in with one of ours being just a two and a halfer.

Thought Rudy was going to take us out but we got the better of him this time. emoTongue We ended up with 15.05 for 1st and snuck in ahead of Rudy's big bass with a couple drops of water more. Most of our bass, just like Weds. when I went, came from 10 to 20 feet deep. Water temp was 70 to 73 where we fished. I also think the wind was blowing more then 8 mph! I think they missed that one. Thanks to all who fished, congrats to those who caught fish and those who got paid. It is always a good day when you get paid to fish.

C-ya out there, emoAngler Jmax

Congrats on the win , you were overdue to get a first in this year's CFF tournaments.

Actually if you look back this is about normal. I don't start doing well until the summer and fall usually. I struggle most years in the late winter and early spring. Thanks. Jmax

Jim covered all the details so all I can add is that I had a great time, we did catch fish at every stop and this time the strategy worked perfect. First stop and we had three keepers pretty fast. I was amazed how windy and cool it was most of the day. Thanks everyone on the congrats on the win. Until this one we have been middle of the pack so if my partner wasn't leaving town on me we might could get on a roll:)

Great bag man. Congrats.

Dad and I thought you would fish the CBA. I guess you are glad you fished this event....?

Yes, I made the right call. When we first started the CFF tournaments they were the first tournaments that I started fishing after I had moved here. I do have a weird kind of loyalty to them. Plus if you consider James and I did not have to pay an entry and we walked away with $380.00 in our pockets that helps a lot too. emoBigsmile I still would have loved to of fished the CBAs which I also enjoy but there was three sacks over 30 lbs in it. emoEek I am pretty sure our best five would have fallen short of the 20 lb mark so we would not have faired as well in it. I don't know where 19 and some change would have ended up in the CBA rankings. emoScratch Jmax

I am always amazed at the sacks that show up at those CBA weigh ins. There is always to catch 'em I guess. I'm not sure either. I have not seen the results yet.

It is hard to compete with the CBA bunch. Day in and day out there is going to be someone of that 100 or so boats that are going to wack'um. You consider some of those anglers are pro's who show up at times,(ie. Buddy Gross, Alex Davis and Michael Neil ex...), some are guides,(ie. Rogne Brown, Steve Kite, Jeff Reed, ex...), then you have all the locals with several ringers who fish more then me, they keep up with the fish movements and know where they are. emoBigsmile You take all this into account and you had better bring your "A" game or you are just donating fishing with that bunch. I have been told by some outside the CBA they thought there was cheating going on. I will tell you that every year they polygraph two to three times a year about four teams in the top five of a tournament. It is pretty much in depth, I know, I had it done to me. Then there is the fact that if you saw something that did not look right you could report that angler to an officer. I don't feel there is any cheating going on myself, those guys are just good. emoWorthy Jmax
