We had a very good day today. I have struggled recently finding bigger bass and had my goal set at 15 lbs today since I thought that would be a reach. I had told Derek if the sun stayed behind the clouds today I was going to fish a spook a lot. That is what I did. emoThumbsup Started fishing grass edges where the grass came up just a couple feet below the surface. Derek drew first and second bass with two in the mid 2 range on a big worm. Then I lost a decent keeper in the grass. After thinking I may need to go to a worm also I had a 3/9 crush my spook. emoTongue Love that top water bite. Moved around that area some more working grass edges and Derek caught another. This one was 3/1 also on a big worm. We both boated a couple shorts but that was it so we moved. Today we hit seven places in all and every place we caught fish. emoAngel The second place I boated a 2/2 that gave us our limit. It was about in the deepest water we fished all day at around 15 feet and hit a shakey. That was it there so we moved to our next place. It was a more shallow flat with grass edges but a ditch running down it. We first tried worms but had no takers. I could see the grass a couple feet under so I went back to my spook. It was 11:30 but the sun was still not too bright with a haze over it. I was working my spook over the grass tops and the next thing I know it sounds like someone had dropped a car battery in the water. Line starts to sing and the fight was on. Good bass gave us a show on top and then plowed through the grass on top. Derek got the net under her and she was just shy of 5 lbs. We moved again and repeated this process, Derek with his worm and me with a spook. I had another blow up and this one culled also. As of that time the smallest we had was a 2/4 that we culled and this one was 2/9. We also had a 2/11, 3/1, 3/9 and the one near five. emoThumbsup We moved again but could not cull up. Caught a few more keepers but none over the 2/9. Finally with only about an hour to go Derek is working one of my sunk trees and slams the hook home. I saw his rod had doubled and got the net. The bass was coming at us and Derek did not realize how big it was. emoMad Got her just out from the boat and it just got heavy. Then it came straight up, like a missile one about 5 lbs or more comes flying out of the water about six feet from me. It cleared the water a good two feet. emoEek Just two feet closer and I could have easily let it land in the net. I think we both took a breath and realized that was the one we needed. It hit the water like a bomb and lunged straight down bull dogging all the way.....SNAP!!!!!!...the line BREAKS!!!!!!! emoBang emoHoppingmad Talk about letting the air out of your sails. We were crushed. That was our money fish. Just two feet closer and she would have been in the boat. emoBooHoo
A couple more keepers but nothing to help. We headed in and ended up with 17.18 lbs. Good enough for sixteenth and some decent points. Taking out the 2/9 and replacing it with the one we lost would have given us a upper 19 or 20 lb limit. emoBawl S@#t happens...it was just not meant to be.
Caught fish today on a spook, shakey, big worm and a crank. Not a bad day and better then I thought. emoGeezer Jmax
