Does no one work anymore? I swear I thought I would go to the lake today for a couple hours and it looked like a busy Saturday. emoScratch Maybe more folks were off today then I figured with it being MLK day. I had so much fun the other afternoon I just had to try it again. Today was a little slower, I only caught about 100 crappie instead of 150. emoBigsmile I really think it was because I did not stay as long. Today I went for some more fish in the freezer and told myself no matter how much fun I was having I needed to keep a limit and clean them for the freezer. So that is what I did. I made my keeper size 11 inches since I thought I would get on them again like last time.

They were still there. The first stop was not that many but they were big ones. I think I broke my crappie record for the Chick with my biggest one there. It was 17 inches long and I weighed it. 3 lbs and 1 oz.! emoEek That's a pretty big hoss of a crappie in my book. I don't remember catching one bigger on the Chick myself. I measured it, weighed it and released it. I just could not bring myself to keep that one. emoRolleyes Left there with 6 nice crappie in the well all between 11 and 13 inches. I also caught three bass and several other crappie that did not make the grade for today.

Moved to the mega school and they were still there. Started off catching one on about every cast. If a crappie did not take it a yellow bass would. Loaded the boat there with one crappie after another. It is just amazing to me how many crappie are in our lake. Simply incredible is all I can say. emoEek I had some company today and saw several others doing the same thing I was. There is just no telling how many crappie are in that area. I finished off my limit with some really nice crappie and came home with 15 that weighed 17 lbs and 11 ozes. emoThumbsup

The water temp today was 45 to 48 where I fished. Most of my crappie came from 12 to 18 feet. Most were on or near the bottom. Rock drops were the ticket. Bobby Garlands crappie assassins in green chartreuse was again my color. Not really sure if it would have mattered. 1/16 oz head on 4 lb high viz test.

See ya'll on the water. emoAngler Jmax

Here are a couple pictures I took, one of that big girl and one of my live well. As usual the pictures don't do them justice.

Good report and congrats on that 3 pounder. Winter time, in my opinion is the best time to go crappie fishing. I gotta make time to go. Thanks for posting.

Glad to see the big uns showing up again. Was starting to get concerned about the crappie population on the chic. Congratulations on the 3 lb'r. Way to get on em!!! emoThumbsup emoThumbsup

congratulations on your pb crappie, Jmax. It is a horse for sure. this time of year the crappie are really bunched up. good move to let the big dog go. it might make it to four lbs one day. emoBigsmile emoGeezer

Thanks gang. I often have some of my bass buddies ask me why I desert the bass often in January and Feb. emoScratch The answer is just numbers. I have a choice of going for bass this time of year and even on a good day I may be lucky to boat 10. Then you think about one or two of those 10 might really be hogs it is very tempting. However when you look at catching 100 crappie yesterday and around 150 crappie Friday those numbers are very hard to turn away from. emoSmile Then you consider catching a crappie on the Chick that is 3 lbs, that kind of compares to catching a 8 lb bass. emoTongue

My Z119 Ranger crappie boat is really wanting to get back to bass fishing but with numbers like you can catch this time of year that is really hard to do. emoRolleyes If you have some kids or novice anglers who have an interest in fishing, crappie this time of year is a great way to start them out. I also boated four bass and no telling how many yellows yesterday. Those are catching trips more then fishing trips. You can do the same thing just drifting a shiner in those large schools of crappie. I would strongly suggest if you want to do some serious catching this is the time to go. emoToast Jmax

I caught one like that once on a rattle trap There's some beg ones in there but I don't think there's lots of them. Nice catch!

Great job on the 3 lbr Jim. They look almost unreal when you get them to the boat, don't they?
Good of you to turn her loose-one that big probably wouldn't be that good of an eater anyway.
I got a 3-14 on the wall that's 18 1/2 in. I was going to turn her loose but after dragging her around all morning showing her off, she started to go belly up. So I had Bud Hull make a beautiful mount.
Looks like you had a good mess anyway-nice work!!

Me and basser9 were fishing a bass tx a few years back and he caught one that was wide as a sheet of paper and at least a foot and half long on a crank bait. We weren't even thinking about it being a catch of a lifetime because we were so concentrated on putting bass in the well for the tournament. No pics ,didn't weigh it or anything just admired it for a minute and let her go We have talked about that fish many times and pondered why we didn't weigh it or keep it for him to mount..

Congrats on that hawg crappie !! emoFish emoDance
