I thought the win would be a deep bite on this one, was I ever wrong. I figured after all the FLW guys had beat up the bass for the past week or so the tournament would be won by a deep bite. James and I started deep and fished deep for the first couple hours of the tournament. By 10:30 that night we had managed six bass, all short. We were talking about this tournament was turning into one of our worst ones. Since we had launched out of HBSP and gone over by boat to Chester Frost I even told James we might not even have to bother going back over, we could just go in and leave. We had tried worms, spinner baits, cranks and chatter bait all deep and nothing. We headed for another deep spot at that time and when we got there we saw two boats were already fishing it. emoBang Made a "U" turn and hit a shallow grass flat. Glad we did. emoSmile
The bass were there in the grass. By that time it was about 11:00 o'clock. The water was starting to cool off and there was deep water near by. I assume the bass had started to move up and go into the shallow grass to feed. I know that area has a lot of bream beds and maybe that was what they were after. emoScratch First one I hooked was 2/3. Finally, a keeper in the boat. Little later I made a cast and my line felt like it was stuck in the grass but the grass was moving. Set the hook and it did not move. emoEek Locked down on it and told James to get the net. Huge splash in the dark and you could tell she was a good one. Short fight later and in came a 9 lber. emoDance From zero to 11 lbs in two fish, that was a big swing.
Stayed in the grass the rest of the tournament. The depth was from 3 foot to about 6 foot. Pain in the butt to try to work the shakeys through all the grass but the bass were in it. Just kept having to pick the grass off our shakeys. emoThumbsup Lost a couple really nice bass but managed several more including a 5/10 to go with the 9. Culled three more times on our smallest to get that one up to 3/14. Our weight on the CFF scale ended up being 18.65 lbs with our best three for 1st place. My nine lber on that scale was 8.98 lbs. which was good enough for big bass of the tournament. Our best five would have gone about 23.50 lbs. emoTongue
Had a great time, want to also thank James for the company. emoThanks
Here is my big one. That one there is a full grown one.
