What a great day. Weather was wonderful except the wind blew way more then we wanted. Derek and I got out this morning for a little morning outing. Thought we would look around for some CBA pre fish bass. We found some. The bass are in full spawn. I really think most of our bass....I'd say 90% were spawners. All of them were caught on plastics and fished very slow. We tried top water, traps and cranks with no luck. All we could get them to bite was plastics. We put 31 bass in the boat between 7 this morning and 2 this afternoon. emoThumbsup Down side today was we could have done even better. I should have retied...had one a good three break off by the boat on a dive. emoAngry Derek made the comment he should retie too but didn't... you know it....he had one break off and then jump trying to throw his worm that looked about 3 to 3.5 pounds. It grew as the day went on and by the time we left I think it weighed 12 pounds. emoLaugh He broke off another on the hook set as well. We lost a couple more and missed a truck load. If you do the math that is a bass about every 15 minutes. emoDance We had one hit, lost or caught about every ten minutes. emoWorthy The lake for us was on fire this morning. We tracked our best bass and when we left I think we had 17 pounds and 5 ounces with our best five. I believe they were 4/7, 3/13, 3/7, 2/14 and 2/12. The 2/12 was a nice spot. Might of had big spot if we had been in a tournament. emoBigsmile The next best two were 2/8 each. Not a bad morning to be culling two and a half pounders.

We hit five places and caught bass in all five. The common thing was the spawn and we looked for staging areas and spawning flats by deeper water. Several of the females had bloody tails and many looked to be fanning. emoThumbsup The lake is up about another foot since the CFF and they should really be about to take off. emoToast

Derek has a picture of the 4 pounder he said he would post. We would have stayed longer but he had a cook out he had to be at. We left fish hitting. Really a great seven hours.

C-ya on the water, Jmax emoAngler

I know that we ought to re-tie fairly often and I do that pretty good. I would like to check your drag and see just how you set it. I'll bet you a dollar that it is set much tighter than I ever set mine. I have had big stripers surge at my boat while I was fishing 8 lb test fluorocarbon and they haven't broken off. The drag should be set about 1/3 of the lb test strength of the line that you are fishing.

You guys did good on the fish that you did land though. The big ones always get off. emoBigsmile emoGeezer

Yea, you are right, I keep mine tighter then that. I have had issues with the hook not penetrating deep enough if the drag is too loose. I do not think it was my drag as much as it was all the rock and wood we were hitting with it that morning. I like the way the florocarbon sinks and feels but it is not the best line to have when you are fishing how and where we were. If it nicks the line it will greatly weaken the strength. I believe that is what happened to me. emoScratch Jmax

Here Jim's big fish of the day. He was killing them all day, I played net man and managed to catch a few while I was at it, lost a good one right before we left I would have liked to see. I was so thrown off about the pink stuff on Jim's boat that I was having trouble trying to focus on fishing. emoAngel

I hope we can find these fish next weekend. Thanks for the ride Jim, I had a blast.

You both make great points. emoTeacher I agree totally with both of you. Since I have gone primarily to Fluoro; if i do not re-tie regularly, I will pay for it. And it can happen in 1 cast I've noticed. If that knot hits an abrasion just right, it may break off shortly after. Never noticed that with Mono.... I think Fluoro catches more fish and I like the sensitivity; but I miss the durability of Mono. Regarding drag, my Dad, (Nauticman) has started a process where he has the drag tight for the hook set and then loosens after the hook set so that he gets penetration on the hook set; but the hook is less likely to pull out or break during the fight after loosening the drag. I have not gone that far, yet! But I am definitly guilty of setting my drag too tight at times. emoTskTsk

If fishing with casting reels like Jmax does most of the time, then all you have to do is hold your thumb on the reel on the hookset. I don't like fumbling with trying to loosen the drag on a fish, especially if it is a big striper and it takes off like you hooked into the back of a semi-truck running down the interstate.

Thanks polo, I hope they will still be in those areas come this Saturday. emoAngel

I usually also loosen the drag once I set the hook and see it is a big fish. On that one I had break off on the dive I miss judged the size and how active it was until it was right at the boat. emoRolleyes Derek is very fast with the net and was already there with it, I think it saw Derek and made that last run before I was ready for it to do that. Then with the weakened rough line it just snapped. I plan to put all new on before the CBA. emoThumbsup Jmax

If you look at that fish in the picture you can see the bloody tail it had and she had eggs in her. emoThumbsup I know some fish have spawned but many have yet to go. Last year we had a very good second wave on the May full moon, I expect the same will happen this year too.
