I just bought my first bass boat and having some small issues. First off it is an 84 stratos that is in really good shape. The only problems are it doesn't idle in gear and after shutting it down to fish for a while it is slow to start again and if you try to hammer the throttle when it does crank then it will bog down and die. I have to run it at low throttle and play the throttle back and forth for a while before it will take of. I am having the carbs built next week hoping it will solve it. Does this sound like carb trouble?

If it is carb issues, push the key in when trying to come out. If it picks up, then it is. It could also be a ignition issue. If you DO have a carbs issue and you run it much you can damage the engine. It may also have mechanical issues as well. Before you spend any money on it. Have a compression AND leakage test at 1/2 ATDC. I have rebuilt a bunch of engines that had good compression but had high leakage.

Here is a page out of a Johnson/Evinrude FACTORY service manul. It clearly states you can have good compression and still have mechanical issues.

I have taken it to a local shop to have it checked. Compression was 95-100 on all 6 cylinders if I remember right. I will let him build the carbs and see if that fixes it. If not I will go farther. When the motor picks up it runs great. It's just when you shut it down to fish a while and then take off again. That's the only time it acts up.

I will have to back wrechin on the compression and leak down test. Not just a compression test, you are not getting the entire story with just a comp. test. You need to know how much each cylinder is losing at top dead center. You can have compression but if it is not retained there is not enough pressure to return your cylinder to the bottom of the cycle and it will cost you power, as the power has to come from somewhere to complete the cycle.

If it only acts up after a hot soak, it may be in the carbs and would need the floats lowered. The carbs have a vent that when the fuel boils, yes it will boil around 200* with a hot soak and the vent will allow it to escape. It is even worse with ethanol. One thing you can try is to trim it while fishing. This allows the boiling fuel to run into the air box and not the engine. If it does better then it is in the carbs. Just my .02

Went out yesterday and fished but didn't sit more than 15 minutes or so and every time a cranked the motor to take off all was fine. It seems to do it when I sit for longer times like an hour or so. I am sorta committed to this shop for the carb rebuilds so I will try that this week. wrechin2 I believe you fixed my buddies Bass Tracker yesterday and he talks highly of you now. If there is still a problem after the carb work then I will be contacting you.

Try to triming it up when fishing. What happens a lot of the time is the fuel will boil and run into the engine and flood it during a "hot" soak. By it being trimed up, the fuel will run into the "air box" and not in the engine.

You must be talking about Rex.
