Johnson trolling motor spindle replacement

Bought a replacement spindle for a '92 Johnson trolling motor. It's the thing in the top housing that sits on the very top of the shaft that all the wiring pass through to go down the shaft, and it sits on a bearing ring (which came with the spindle) The question is, I took the set screw out of the old spindle and something is still holding it on. Does anyone know what gives here short of just busting the old one off? Thanks.

theres also a pin that goes through the gear you will need to loosen the collar on the shaft and slide the shaft up to knock the pin out

ThanksWatermark, I was missing the loosening the shaft part. I was about to lose my religion doing it without that step.
