Planned on Turkey hunting this morning but woke up at 6:15 and didn’t want to rush around and climb the ridge and get carried off by the skeeters and nats so I decided to hit the lake. The wife had a 10 am commitment so I started off alone and picked her and the kids up at about 11:30.

My first stop was a spawning flat. I picked up several fish but the majority was small. I believe Drumking and I were thinking alike today. I’m not much of Crappie spawn fishing person and I definitely can’t stand to troll so with the ratio of shorts to keepers in the spawning area, I decided to try the post spawn approach. Fished a little bit deeper and a little slower. My second stop was a post spawn area and I found a few spawned out females and some males home. They were thumping the 1/32nd and BG shad at about a 9 count. I should have kept these keepers since my freezer is in need of some fish however since I was going to work this evening, I decided to let the swim. I went and picked the wife and kids up at about 11:30 at WT and headed back up to see if the wife and kids could fight a few.

In a matter of 30 minutes, the fish had changed. It took me a few minutes to find them and the right depth. This time they were near the bottom or structure at about an 11 or 12 count and were very passive! Earlier they were thumping the jig and now the tap was almost undetectable. I would hook a fish and let Ashley and Dylan take turns fighting them.My wife did manage a couple but as she stated…I didn’t have a clue I had a fish. I didn’t feel a hit or anything, it was just there J During this stop, my son also changed my plans. He wanted to put the keepers in the cooler thing J . Now I have about 15 or so keepers on ice to clean tomorrow morning. We moved to another post spawn area and didn’t find it near as productive but a few fish were home. We also attempted to fish a few docks. Most of the shallow docks had fish on them but they were generally small. Around 1:45 it looked like a storm was brewing so we decided to call it a day. I had hoped to stay out to about 3 or until I got a call from TNDOE. I had ordered a HB 998c SI and if UPS delivered it, she was going to deliver it to me. Unfortunately I didn’t get the call until about 2:45 and we were off the water and almost to Apison L .
However I did realize that you can go from Apison to Charleston (where I work) by way of Soddy Daisy!!! It just takes you a little while. Needless to say, I have my 998 (from DJmarineELECTRONICS) in hand and ready to install! If you need electronics or other fishing items, you need to checkout www.djsmarinelectronics.com/ He is a super nice guy, great pricing, excellent service and a sponsor of CFF!
