While looking at a Yamaha SHO verses a Mercury XS. I keep hearing oil change and the outrageous cost. So I decided to run the numbers. A 2 stroke runs these days on a 50 to 1 ratio. So every gallon of gas uses 2.56 ozs of oil for each gallons of gas it burns. Yamaha recommends an oil change for every 100 hours of use. The cost of which is approximately 150 dollars. I ran the numbers on a 60 mph avg. an a mpg avg. of 8.

So at 100 hours Yamaha will charge 150.00 for an oil change.

At 100 hours the Mercury will have burned 750 gallons of fuel. One gallon of oil would have burned for every 50 gallons of fuel used. That would be 15 gallons of Mercury oil used in 100 hours of service. Mercury warranty oil costs average of 40.00 dollars. Times 15 equals $600.00

Motors today vary their oil input to what is needed to allow for less carbon buildup and emission. Plus your should also account for the SHO's lower gas mileage.

An I bet if I change it myself it will be 75.00 an on break in on a 2 stroke u double the oil not sure how long.the engine cost me 2200.00 more than the merc

Carl, there have been several independent (supposedly) tests on the SHO & XS. They all basically ended in a tie, as far as the cost per mile. I have an SHO and love it. If I had chosen the XS, I'm sure I would feel the same way. Both great motors. Your actual mileage will depend on your hull and how much junk you haul around. Bullets get great mileage (relatively speaking) compared to other hulls. I have a Phoenix 921 and get about 4-4.5 MPG. The one thing that the most of XS folks wish they had the the SHO has is the almost silence at idle. I know most of this belongs in your other thread and I've tried to stay out of it because you really can't go wrong. My only advice is get the most warranty you can and run the crap out of it

The break in period is 4 hours and the ecu doubles the oil intake, no mixing in the gas tank .
This is on the optimax pro xs

Carl,
Thanks for your review and numbers.
I'm confused with what you mean about an oil change and $150.
I run an Evinrude 2 cycle 225 and have a 2~ oil reservoir that mixes with my gas.
I change the lower unit oil every year.
I am a novice on this subject.
What do you mean about oil change and $150 charge.
Please be kind in your response, I am only wanting to learn from your expert advice.
Thank you for your time.

"The 4 stroke motors have oil just like a car. So it has to be changed when it gets old."
