Ray and I practiced several days on the chick with no big help. We could not put anything together. It was so bad I think in 4 days we only had like 5 keepers total. We figured out where not to go. Went to Nick 2 short days, it was so hot. The first day no keepers, 2nd day 3 keepers.
Day 1 Chick
We ran up river started fishing grass. Nothin! Moved around finally caught our 1st keeper around 9 caught it deep. We ran more deeper water. Catching fish but no keepers. I finally hooked up on a deep crank bait got it to side of the boat and it only had one hook when it came up the first time 2nd time it came up it was gone. Ray broke off a leader on the hook set. It was not looking good. It’s around noon finally see what we are looking for several fish sitting on a deep point. Ray started catching fish on a jig but they were all short except one keeper. Moved again it’s 1:30 the wind was blowing pretty good now. Found another school and they were what we was looking for. Caught 3 good keepers on deep cranks, couple on jigs, drop shot. Caught several in like 30 min, cull a few times. Moved around but no help. Ended the day in the lead with 15.52
Day 2 Nick
Ran up river started punching grass. When the grass thinned out we threw buzz baits. Caught our first 3 keepers on buzz baits. I lost our best fish of the day punching. I just couldn’t get it out of the grass and when it came out I gave it slack and it was gone. We punched all day thinking it was going to be where we caught the better fish. We caught fish off an on all day culling several times. Caught more fish where the grass was narrow an deep water in front. Ended the day with 12 something But it was close at the end Tim and his partner had a dead fish penalty and it cost them. They were 2nd and without the penalty they would have won!
Thanks to the committee for their time and effort. It is a great tx trail with some great guys. Hope to see everyone next year.
