Some friends invited us to Watts Bar Lake this weekend. The couple that invited us had just taken up fishin' agian, so I brought "The Basshound" and my wife brought her kayak. ( I hope I win the HOBIE, so I can go kayakin' with her.) The weather was nasty, cold, windy and rainin', temp in the mid 40,s. (I don't EVEN want to know what the CHILL Factor was.)
So we hunkered down in the cabin and played monopoly for a while. When the wind finally laided down , I wanted to go fishin'. They thought I was crazy. ( I thought that was a givin'!) I lured them to the waters edge with a promise of a roaring bon fire.( I'm known as "The PYRO too!) I built a chimney fire using a hollow log on the center of the fire to create a blow torch type fire. It's really cool looking to watch! & warm too.
I slipped over to the boat and bailed it out from the previous nights rain. I asked them is any wanted to go. "No way!" was their reply. It had started to spit snow from the ominous clouds above. "Keep the fire going and I'm goin' to try and catch one before I take the boat out." I headed out to the main lake, thinkin' I could catch a bigen' on the point. The worms had drown or escaped from the container, I had left in the boat, so I hooked about 5 or 6 BERKLEY GULP Redworms on a 1/0 hook drop shot style and let the frigid breeze drift me around the point.
As I came to a drop off, my line twitched, I picked up the rod.... WHAM! FISH ON! This fish jumped, like it was shot out of a cannon! As I was fightin' the fish, the sun popped out and the wind quit! "It was kinda freaky??" I got the fish in and headed back to the warmth of the roarin' fire. Tom took a couple of photos and it was released. As if on cue, the wind picked back up and the black clouds rolled in. I had the "bug" and wanted to catch "Just one more". My wife was concerned about the weather. So I told her I wouldn't go far, I had seen fish bustin' the top water when I caught the first one.
I tied on a double willow leaf spinner bait. ( Chartruse & Black)to my ABU Garcia REVO Prem & Ugly Stick 14 lb Trilene and went back to the point. On the second cast I had bite, I stopped reelin' and let the bait fall.... WHAM, FISH ON! Line started peelin' of my reel as the rod throbbed in my hands. After he had finished his run, I started to gain some line on him, and the he'd run again. After ten minutes I thought he might break me off. I eased up on the pressure a bit and he started to come to the boat. I reeled franticly to keep the line tight. When I could see him, I nearly p'd my pants! A HUGE Striper! No net in the boat! (he would'nt have fit anyway)
He came along side and rolled up on his side. There was the BIGGEST fish of my life! I held the rod in my left hand and put my right hand in his mouth. The line went slack and the spinner bait fell right out! I think it spooked him. With my hand in his mouth he started thrashin' about and almost pulled me in! I couldn't hold him! *&%$#! He pulled free! I couldn't believe it. MAN, WHAT A FISH! I retied my bait and started to cast wildly around the point. I hooked up with a couple more fish, but they ALL came off!
On the way back,(I was freezin' by this time) I looked at my spinner bait to find the hook was badly rusted and had nearly NO POINT at all. Man, What a D A! Some kinda "ELITE" fisherman you are! I said to myself. I kicked myself in the pants all the way back. (it just goes to show you, that it's ALL about the basics) When I returned to the cabin, the roarin' fire was now smolderin'. I had been gone 3 hours! My wife was VERY concerned. When I told her " THE BIG FISH STORY" She was OK with me. She knows I wouldn't have stayed out ther that long if the fish were't bitin' ( GOTTA LOVE HER). I hope Tom & Karin invite us back! Thanks Ya'll! Tight Lines.... KEEP YOUR HOOKS SHARP! & FISH ON!
