Finally was able to get out of the house Saturday and bass fish for the first time since last October. Due to high winds (20-30 mph) our fishing locations were limited but it was nice to finally get on the lake. Lake elevation was 356’ which is 2’ above winter pool. Water temp was 47 degrees and the water clarity was surprisingly clear. Air temp was around 40 with mostly cloudy skies. In fact we experienced some snow showers during the afternoon.

Fishing was slow but we did manage to catch 5 bass and one monster drum. We had 1 keeper bass at about 3.5 lbs and the rest were under 15 inches. All the fish came off rocky banks in about 6’ of water just off the main lake. It was important that there was deeper water nearby. All the fish were caught on a junebug finesse worm worked very slowly in the same style as you would work a Texas rigged worm. We used 10# test clear mono on spinning gear.

I did hear a report from a small 10 boat fruit jar tournament held on Friday out of the same area where the winning weight was 29 plus lbs for 5 fish. At first I had my doubts about this but was able to confirm this was indeed true. 2nd place had over 23 lbs. No details were available on how and where the fish were caught. (I’m sure that’s not surprising to anyone) This is the largest 5 bass limit I have heard of in years so I hope this is a sign that 2007 will be a good year.

Great to hear that you finally got out on the lake BassinBob. I have been meaning to email you and your post has prompted me to action. Expect one soon. Wow, 29+ is a big sack. I know that there are lots of good fish out there in KY lake. Is there any grass this time of year? It seems that the fish moving early on Guntersville were on flats with grass patches in the warmest water creeks.

Much of the grass on Ky Lake is just now starting to sprout new growth. However, the species of grass we have now is very different from the milfoil we had back in the 80's. I don't know the name of what we have now but i do know it grows solid from the bottom to the surface so there's no holes, or matting on the surface, for the bass to get in and out of. Because of this the bass don't use this species nearly as much as they did the milfoil in years past.
