I headed down to south GA this past weekend and was forunate enough to get out and fish Lake Seminole with my dad on Sunday. We put in at Cummings Landing around 9:00 am and headed over to the Florida side of the Chattahoochee River. This little spot was approximately 200 yards long and held somewhere around a dozen beds once we searched them all out. Luckily we had the area mostly to ourselves for much of six hours. Many of the beds held bass that were either not aggressive or just didn't seem to be holding their territory strongly, kinda strolling around. We did however get two nice females in the boat after much patience. Both females were post spawn and were quite a challenge to entice a bite from them. Many times they would simply pick up or push our plastics out of their bed. They did become more aggressive around 1:00 pm once the water warmed some and we got out a small ladder to stand on and distanced ourselves from the beds even further than before. The first female pictured below weighed near 4.30 lbs and the second near 4.0 pounds. (Rob- I told you I would take a picture of the first fish I caught with your rod so there she is!) We made a non-Tx move and left the fish and headed back across the river to Saunders Slough. The water there was fairly stained and slam full of grass in most areas. We did find a couple of bedding fish there but couldn't entice any activity from them. We then headed over to the main lake and fished around in Fish Pond Drain near the Crows Foot and I boated one male about 2 pounds off a bed but could never get the female to take. The water was clear and the temperature was in the mid 60's warming slightly during the day. The lake has changed alot over the last few years as the grass is really choking many areas and I also noticed that much of the taller standing timber has fallen.

We did have some company in our first fishing spot and he was kind enough to let us get very close for a good picture. (TT, we didn't make it to the gator hole that I was telling you about but this guy pictured below was about 5-6 feet long and we got a little wet when he decided to move on.)

The weather was great and I couldn't have had a better fishing partner. emoToast

SJ, glad you got to fish with your dad...special times.... good pictures too. Why didn't you get that big thing in the boat????LOL

Great report from down south. I could give you a tip on getting the big females to pounce on your bait in the bed.

The males build the beds, the females use them. The males "doctor" the eggs ( No reflection on you Polo) and then the males guard the bed after the females move on... "Mister Moms"
Is that right?

Thanks FA, I knew if I didn't smile that I would get trouble from you ;)

yeah, the male I boated had a little bit of wear on his tale but the area I caught him in was quite sandy and not much debris so he didn't have to work as hard to build the bed.

Nice pic of the gator, and great report. I never thought of using a ladder to see better, thanks for the tip.

Yeah, it helps quite a bit especially when you find a spooky female that won't take unless you are a good distance away. With the sun high in the sky I just watched my bait intensely and looked for a gil flare; it gets pretty hard to keep up with the fish the entire time when you are that far away. Just remember when you set the hook that you are standing on a ladder and not the deck of the boat!

It is good to see a report from Seminole. I am not sure how much the lake has changed but several years ago Seminole was one of the best lakes I fished at that time. I fished it about ten times and on each trip I had at least one fish over 5 pounds and in a regional tournament had two over 7 pounds. Seeing your picture of the gator reminded me that I ruined a lower unit by running over a gator where the Flint and the Hooch come together. It is a long way from there to Jack Wingate’s.

Sheez ... if I climbed up on that small ladder ... it would be me in the drink swimming with the gators!!! Nice report Stump .. you resemble your father! hahahaha No surprise there I'm sure.

Looks like it was a very nice trip. Bet the dog kids are glad to see you again!

TT

That is a long way from the Indian mounds back to Wingates. Did you have a tow or did you have to fight the Flint all the way back? The current in the hooch is stronger than the flint most of the time but I bet you still had a slow trip.

The lake has changed quite a bit in the last 5 years or so. The grass is really thick and making the fishing pressure much greater in the areas that aren't clogged with grass. Many fish are forced to bed in the first area they can find and that means even more pressure on the spawners. They have sprayed some areas around spring creek and there are some grass eating carp that are contained near Sealy's.

We made it close to a marina that is a couple of miles up the Hooch. One of the guides from Jack's took me back to my truck and I drive the trailer down to pick it up.

I hate to hear the grass is taking over down there. I really did enjoy my trips to the lake. Jack's is an interesting place to stay.
