Hello everyone. I just joined this site so be gentle!
I work for the University of Tennessee fisheries dept as a research specialist. I do a lot of work with Lake Sturgeon in partnership with the TWRA and the USFWS. The research has really cranked up in the last 6 months ands now we have some graduate students that will be focusing on them as well.
We get quite a few angler reports and we investigate them all. What I'm asking is for everyone to please report any fish they catch, or see while fishing. Some of these fish will be reaching sexual maturity in the near future (12-15 years old) and any and all information we can get would be greatly appreciated!! Some of these fish are beginning to get some great size to them!! The areas we are focused on primarily are Ft loudoun, watts bar and chickamauga. We have been fairly successful in catching these fish in the fall in areas we know the fish are staying, but that's where angler reports help give us a better idea of other locations we may be able to focus our efforts.
If you catch a fish, try to get a length and weight and also pictures. Specific location or gps coordinates of location where caught also. I know all the info I'm requesting may not be possible but any little bit will help!! Please try to be as gentle with these fish as possible. Do not hold them by the tail alone. Support their body with your other hand. You can contact the twra or feel free to contact myself with any information.
We currently have some fish tagged surgically with acoustic transmitters that will "ping" a receiver when they swim by. We use this information to look at migration and general movement patterns throughout the year. The goal of this re-introduction project is to someday make the Lake Sturgeon a gamefish in the state of TN and give anglers a opportunity to catch a truly pre-historic fish. Not to mention one of the largest freshwater fish in the world!!
Thank you everyone
