I have not had a very good year as far as seeing deer and having any big shooters go by. Most of my deer hunting this year has been watching birds and squirrels from my stand. The first day of muzzle loading season I shot a small buck(spike) with in the first thirty minutes of the morning. Thought it was going to be a great season but it was just about all downhill from there. Spent a number of days in the woods after that and only saw six other deer, one more spike, three doe and then a couple more I never saw the heads well enough to know for sure what they were.
This morning was another great morning to be in the woods. There was a fog on the ground with a chill in the air that made it great to be alive and just enjoy the nature dawn a new day. I had positioned myself in some thicker stuff since it was so late into the season. It seemed to me what few deer were moving were sticking to the thick stuff. As I sat there thinking how great we have it here to be able to enjoy God's handy work I saw my usual birds and a couple squirrels working the underbrush and leaves doing their usual daily routine. Most of the ground was so wet from our resent rains that you could barely even hear the squirrels digging in the leaves. Since I am about half deaf any ways I thought it would kind of even things out since they could not hear me either.
I kept a lookout for any movement trying to catch a flick of a tail or a wiggle of an ear. It was 9:30 and my legs were feeling cramped sitting on my small stool I had brought so I eased up and stood there for a few moments. It was then I caught that movement I had been looking for. Out about 75 yards I could see a shadow through the under brush moving my way. Double checked it to make sure my eyes were not playing tricks on me. Yep, here came a deer! emoDance Eased back down on my seat and grabbed the gun. The deer hit an opening where I could see it fairly well and I immediately caught sight of a decent rack. Finally, not a big shooter but a decent buck none the less. I scoped him in and could tell he was more then just another spike. Behind him I could see two more deer coming. The first appeared to be a doe but it may have been a smaller racked deer. The third was too deep into the brush for me to tell what it was. I had to make a quick call and I decided to take the first one since it was closer and I had a shot. As he crossed to the side of me about 40 yards out I put the cross hairs in a opening in front of him. I let him walk into my scope and when his chest was in the cross hairs I squeezed off the shot. BOOM! The ol' Remington 742 30-06 sounded like some cannon shattering the quiet of the morning. He did one of those half kicks and with his tail down took off in a death run. I could see him from where he ran crashing through the brush and I knew he was hit hard. Did not go 35 yards before he flipped over and passed. Took a total of a couple seconds.
I had not been sure I was going to get a chance this year at a decent buck since it had been so slow for me. I sat there for a little bit and thanked the Lord for what had just occurred. I know he will be some good eating. emoAngel Got up and walked over to him, a really nice 6 point.
Time to go fishing. emoBigsmile Jmax
