Late report.

I finally got into the turkey woods last Saturday afternoon and was stressed I had waited so long. I took my buddy Robin who has always been good luck. We huff it up the mountain and get settled in and I get an answer, good start. After an hour and the bird working close and pulling back a few times, it heads for the hills gobbling his head off, Im sure on the tail of a cute hen. 30 mins later I decide a set-up change is in order.

Off to the backside of my property. We set up in a fencerow, looking out across a cow pasture. One call, and birds in two places answer, daddy likes. We cant decide which birds are closer and spin directions before settling in on the pasture direction.

With-in 15 minutes I have two long-beards coming across the field looking for the sexy thang calling to them. They are hugging the property line, but no matter there are going to get double-wacked in just a couple minutes.

They get in range and I’m whispering to Robin to “SHOOT”, he’s not firing….I figure hell with it, and pull the trigger, all I get is a click. I slowly rack the bolt and the shell pops out onto the ground. You cant feed a new shell without making a huge racket on this gun, so I opt to put that same shell back in, pull the trigger and CLICK. I’m still telling Robin to fire, he either cant hear me or his gun won’t go off either. I pull the bolt back and push it hard forward again, by this time the birds are getting really leery of what’s gong on in this overgrown fencerow! I pull up and at the same time Robin get a shot off at the right side bird, the left bird jumps over the fence and my gun goes off this time as it sails straight down the hill into the hardwoods. CRAP! Robins bird is running for its life along the fence line and I pop off one shot for good measure and it is still running today I bet. As it goes out of sight I start calling really hard, and get a bird down the hill to gobble….that’s interesting I think.

Robin tells me HIS gun jammed after the first shot, I tell him my whoa’s, we are a camo comedy at this point. I said, Im gonna check over that fence to see if the bird I tried to shoot might be down there. I start walking a few steps and hear a gobble down that hill…..hmmm. I wait a minute and call, the bird damn near blows my hat off with a gobble less than 20 yards. I hit the ground and get ready. Im in an open trail, looking directly into the setting sun. I ease over 2 fet to get a small tree to block the sun for me. 2 minutes go by and I hear a putt, and see him come out to the left of the tree, I lean over as he jumps back to the right after seeing me and I blast him in the air. Feathers are flying everywhere, its all of 10’ away from me after all. It has disappeared over that steep hill and I run over to see him hobbling and flapping down the mountain and I blast him one more time and kill him.

It seems I took off 99% of his wing with the first shot. J

I retrieve him and Robin and I share excuse’s about the first shots, no matter, a bird is riding in the truck that night.

THIS is why I love turkey hunting.
