My name is John and after traveling the world over the last 24 years while in the service, I have moved back home to Ringgold. I will be picking up my new boat in Harrison on Saturday. My plan is to take my son out on Sunday. Before I left all I fished was farm ponds in the area so I am not familiar with any of the lakes. I know of a boat ramp off hwy 58 so I figure thats as good a place to start as any. There is a lot of good information on the forum and it looks like I have a lot of reading to do.

Yeah definitely read and be very careful when running around. They will probably bring the water back down soon. I know of a few guys already that have beached their boat this year and last weekend I towed in three different boats b/c they hit shallow areas also. Get a topo map!

First of all thanks for your service and welcome home. Lots of info here and another congrats on the new boat I'm sure you and your son will love it.

I looked for a chick topo at walmart on brainerd road and they were out. I had a depth finder with gps put on the boat and I bought a chip that is supposed to have lake maps on it. Are those reliable?

They are reliable but one minute you can be in 25 feet of water and the next min. on the bottom so learn the buoys and channels and stick with them awhile and watch where others run but don't follow until you know they know what their doing...lol

I plan on taking it easy and learing to use the electronics and trolling motor. Might throw something but mainly just trying to figure out the boat. If anyone wants to donate an hour or so I would be happy to follow them around.

Like Rod said, when in doubt stay inside the bouys. Some of the secondary channels are even marked so it takes alot of guess work out of navigating.

If this is the John I think it is, he will never be able to get off of work to fish. You might as well bring that new boat up to my house right after you pick it up!

Thank you for your service and welcome back. I'm more than likely going to fish Sunday at Harrison Bay. If you still need a few pointers about the lake send me a pm and I'll be glad to help Sunday.

Yes Sir, I finally pulled the trigger. This weekend is CW but they only happpen once a month so I have to take advantage when I can.

A big thanks for all you've done for us while serving our Great Nation! I echo what everyone has said, between the buoys.
