I have seen the rigs that sell in BPS and other places for anywhere from 10 to 30 bucks used to spool new line on reels. I usually do this sitting on the couch while watching tv but I hate the full length rod being in the room and hitting things when I move around. Well I was sitting in the library ( bathroom ) and thinking... I have a couple of cheap broken spinning rod handles I've been keeping for some reason...Hoarder alert!!!!... I made a quick trip to the hardware store down the road and for about 6 bucks bought all the hardware I thought I would need.
U Clamp 5/16 x 2 1/2
wing nut
spacers
Teflon washers
wire
1=Cut off 1 side of the U-clamp and 1 end of U-clamp bar leaving the sides.
2=insert the smooth part of the U-clamp into the end of the rod and epoxy to hold, place the threads slightly angled to the side so the line comes off the spool straight into the rod guide.
3=place a slight bend in both ends of the flat bar so that the forked end will surround the rod and the other end will form a level bed.
4=place the flat bar on the threads and onto the rod, you may have to open the forked end up a little then squeeze the forked end back to secure to the rod.
5= wire rap the forked end in place to secure but still allow some lift off the rod.
6=wrap with tape to cover the wire sharp edges.
7= place the spacer then the Teflon washer, line spool so that the line comes off in clock wise rotation, other Teflon washer then wing nut. tighten to desired tension.
8=feed line thru the guide onto reel, sit back and enjoy TV while spooling line.
If you use an old spinning rod you can turn the rod either way to spool baitcaster or spinning reel.. Hope this gives you something to do on a rainy day.
