My little brother, my older brother, and two friends went hiking on our land yesterday--WAAAY up in the mountains. They were laughing, hollering, having a good time (basically making all the noise they could). As an after thought, Caleb, my younger brother, decided to bring his rifle, "just in case!"
Let me set the stage a little bit--both my brothers are new to hunting. This is the first year to hunt deer for both of them. They enjoy it, but they're not obsessive about it like I am. As a matter of fact, Caleb has only been out one time this year (opening day). I can't consider yesterdays "hunt" a legitimate one. ... But I guess I have to now.

Caleb is a cross country runner and the others were going too slow for him, so he speeds up, pretty much jogging through the woods. He jumps a doe, goes a little further, jumps two more does, then starts to realize there might be something to his "strategy." So he starts to really pay attention to movement.
Takes a few more steps, sees antlers, and sees the antlers run off. Luckily for him (unluckily for the buck) the antlers stop and look back. Now, Caleb is not a die-hard hunter, but he IS one heck of a shot. Always has been. The buck stops and looks back @ about 75 yards, and by this time Caleb has his Savage .308 up, with the deer in his crosshairs.
Caleb puts a bullet right through the lungs. Buck didn't go far. He's a TALL 8 pt. This is Caleb's first nice buck. (He shot a button buck opening day--thinking it was a doe). I coudn't be happier for him.
ps- This also really puts me in a good mood--this deer was YOUNG. (Not that he killed a really young one, but that such a young one had a really nice rack). I'm no expert at aging a buck, but best I could tell, it's teeth looked like a 1.5 yr old. No way it was older than 2.5.
Dressed out it weighed 107 lbs, and it had more fat on it than I've ever seen. I guess all the acorns, food plots, and other abundant nutrients are really 'em helping out.
