I took a friend and his son for a short catfishing trip this morning. We fished 3 hours and caught 9 small cats. The largest was 11.0 blue, another 10.5 channel. We fished the channel drops near Harrison Bluff and fish hit both shrimp and jello-garlic hotdogs.emoGeezer

just wondering? Do you use those shrimp natural or do you add anything like the hotdog mix? Also that's a really nice size channel cat. All we seem to get lately are the blues.

I usually use shrimp natural, but with the good success we have had with Muskrat's secret formula on hot dogs, I thought that I would try them on shrimp and the fish love them too. To remind everyone of the formula. 1 pkg red jello, garlic salt, garlic powder to 1 pack of hot dogs or 1 pound of shrimp. Dissolve the jello in warm water after adding the garlic salt and powder, then just pour it over the dogs and leave it on your counter overnight. Preferably in a bowl with a lid on it. Makes the wife much happier. LOL emoUpsmile emoGeezer
We caught 2 channels today and all the rest blues. I usually target blues 'cause I think that they taste better than channels. Channels fight twice as hard though. Dr Phil thought he had hooked Moby Dick when that big channel hit. That fish jerked him around like a rag doll. emoUpsmile

DK, you need to get Dr Phil to sign up on the website. It looks like you had some good ones. Just think if the bass could average that size. Wouldn't that be a brawl. Keep up the good work.

Dr Phil has three children who are into high school sports big time and that pretty much keeps Phil occupied most of the time. I don't know when he would have time to check the website. He is a big dove, duck, deer, and turkey hunter. I'm just getting him introduced to fishing and he is loving it. He and his sons do 4 wheeling nearly every weekend unless the kids are in a tournament someplace.emoGeezer

My kids and his kids used to swim on a summer team together and I think that I met him once or twice. They seem like a really nice family. I'm glad that he is enjoying the fishing.

Thanks for the info! I do agree the blues taste better and I really think the channels fight harder. Thanks to this forum I catch a few crappie in the winter/spring for eating so I let all the cats go.

I'm glad to read that some of you have tried the "red jello / wiener recipe" I passed along a couple weeks back. I hope you had some luck with it. I went back to the nuke towers last week and had good results again with a big tupperware bowl of "jello weanies". I'm even soaking my nightcrawlers in the liquid jello now - lol. Ms. Muskrat and I ran into an added bonus with the white bass in the "jumps" and caught quite a few on top water lures ( Pop R- buzz bait - etc. ) and hooked into a few largemouth bass on shallow running crank baits hanging out a little deeper. It was great to have a couple of rods out catching cats in 55 feet of water and also catching fish on artificial lures on top.

I know that this is hard to believe, Whistler, but I actually like blue cats better than crappie to eat. Most people think that I am crazy. Stripers are my favorite to eat, followed closely by blues, bass which I rarely keep, then shellcracker/bream and finally crappie.

I'm with DK on this one too. I think the stripers and blue catfish are the best eating fish in the lake. When properly cleaned and properly cooked they are really good. Don't get me wrong I love most all fish but if I'm fishing for food fish I throw the channel cats back.
We are blessed to have such a great fishery that we can choose which fish we want to eat.
