So what goes into gathering this live bait? Do you use your fish finder to find the bait fish then drop a cast net in the area? do you have a specific bait fish, such as a threadfin that you target? if so, how do you figure out where to drop the net? I'm assuming a live well or a minnow bucket just won't cut it either. So i am asking, what all goes into gathering this live bait?

I look for threadfin on my graph or flipping on the surface if I'm on the lake, next to wingwalls if I am below the dam. I find that the more I look for them the more I know where to find them on future trips. I got my first castnet at Wal-mart to initially learn, but now I have one a bit better off the internet - 5ft radius.

I just posted a few details on how many shad I keep, what rig I use and where I keep them in this this thread.

Good Luck!

A noninsulated bait tank will work but an insulated one is much, much better. Aeration and charcoal filtration are a must for frisky healthy threadfins. 30-50 gallon are other choices to be considered. Blue water brand bait tanks and Super Bait Tank 11 are a couple of kinds to look at. A 5 ft radius net for starters. Not all net brands are the same for castability. Trial and error and $ to get a good throwing net. I use Shad-Keeper formula in my water to help on reducing losses also.
