here's the best system ive found for keeping fish alive in summer tournaments.
1. fill livewells with well water. its cooler and wont have chlorine
2. close off livewell overflow so you dont loose water everytime you put it on pad
3. add g-juice and recirc the livewell constantly
4. turn on my bubbler
5. the v-t2 vents exchange metabolic gases
6. mid way though the tournament i add half a bag of ice and more g-juice to neutralize the chlorine in ice.
7. at end of tournament add other half of ice and maybe another shot of g-juice
8. fill my weigh in bag from MY LIVEWELL
9. minimize the amount of time fish are in the bag and are out of the water being weighed (i think im gonna get a bubbler for my bag).
10. RELEASE THEM INTO THE DEEPEST WATER AVAILABLE (ie the end of the dock). dumping in the mud or on the rocks doesnt give the fish the best opportunity to live.
11. if i catch a fish that wont stay upright then i put a weighted clip on the anal fin til its able to stay upright on its own or weigh in, Fizz the fish after weigh in if needed.
EVERY FISH SEEN FLOATING ON ITS SIDE AFTER WEIGH IN WILL DIE IF SOMETHING(FIZZING) ISNT DONE TO HELP IT. that fish will wear itself out trying
to right itself and get to deeper water.
gonna take some heat for this part im sure but....................................
IMHO, you shouldnt be allowed to fish tournaments if you dont know how and arent prepared to fizz a fish, ESPECIALLY TOURNAMENT DIRECTORS who are ultimately responsible for the care of fish after they are weighed. its not hard and here is a great instructional video. you can get needles from rural king or any vet.
