This is (as the saying goes, ‘just my two cents’), and I’m certainly no biologist. But, in the discussion of why and where the stripers came from that are in the Chick Lake. I have trouble with the notion that these fish or most of them are there because they, (lock through). from Watts Bar Lake. It is my understanding that the stripers above the dam, test positive for certain pollutants. It is also my understanding that the fish that are tested below the dam, when tested are not in the danger level and there are no advisories, , except a couple in certain areas, that I am aware of.
If these fish are locking through and do not test positive to pollutants, than they must lock through as fingerlings or as fry, and do not have time to become contaminated in the Watts bar environment. Could this be what is happing?

Also, at certain times during the year stripers come up the Hiwassee river, and seen in good number. Where do these fish come from? They seem to be going up river as if to spawn. Do most of them stay in the Hiwassee, or do they come up from the Tennessee River?

Recently, ‘as most of you know, that have been reading the (CFF) fishing reports’, there seems to be a good number of stripers in the, “chick lake”. ( At least in an area or two ) Have these fish been there for some time, and just overlooked? Or, are they some of the fish that migrate up the Hiwassee? And do you suppose that the Hiwassee spawn, (if indeed there is one) is at least partially successful?

And getting back up to below Watts bar Dam, Why do the striper numbers appear to be down? Is it just the time of year and the fish have went down steam, perhaps to the lake? Or, are these stripers not locking though at this time?

I always assumed the stripers in the Hiawassie go up river from the Tennessee River ( Chickamauga Lake) and I always heard they go up there chasing bait ( trout) that are found above where the Ocoee runs into the Hiawassie. I know you can purchase small trout to use as bait for the stripers...just make sure you have your receipt for your purchase of the bait !!! I dont KNOW any of these Ideas I have to be absolute facts...just what I have heard from the locals.emoAngel

Majority are stocked, although I am sure a few lock down (from Watts Bar) and a few lock up (from Nickajack) but most are stocked.

This is a second or third hand story! I think DrumKing told me this. He was talking with a TWRA guy at the ramp below Watts bar about striper movement. TWRA put a radio tag on a very large striper to follow her movements. She traveled the entire length of Chickamauga lake. They said that on that particular day she was near Sequoyah.

I believe that there have been a few successful spawns on the upper end of the Hiwassee River. Stripers also move up Sewee Creek in the spring.

It's hard to fool Mother Nature all the time. Just look at Weiss Lake. Stripers have pretty much taken over down there.
