My girlfriend just started to enjoy fishing with me and I would like to get her a new rod/reel. I think should would be able to cast and operate one of those closed face spincast reels better than anything else. You know the kind you used as a kid with the push button on them. I need one that could handle decent size cats with a decent drag on it. Any suggestions? Preferable something she could bass fish with too so not too heavy of setup. Are the zebco reels still good?

Get her a Zebco Rhino RCS5 and hang it on an Ugly Stik. The reel comes spooled with 20 pound Trilene and has a decent drag. I will handle 95 percent of the cats she will catch and 100 percent of the green fish.

Ha! I knew those cats glowed green at the plant!

cheeze is right on the money there the rhino's are the way to go i have a whole box of other closed face reels
that i bought for glockjr, including 1 of the more expensive abu garcia's and none of have the depenabilaty
of the rhino's (he has em on all 4 of his rods) . do watch for line twist though it can get bad enough
to make slack line coil around the rod tip and be very frustrating for a beginner

Gotta' figure...Zebco has been in the business for many years. No telling how many 202's that I burnt up as a kid, and when they came out with the 33 we was in hog-heaven.

I just have to add a comment here. I have high dollar reels and use them. But I am not ashamed to admit that I have a Zebco 33 on a Berkley Lightening Rod that I catch more big catfish on than any other rod I have.

I have 12lb Spiderwire mono on that reel that works just right for catfish. 12lb test may be a little on the big side for bass and especially panfish so you could load the reel with 10 or 8lb.

That push button closed face spinning reel idea is the right decision for your Gerfreddie. There are many reels on the market that even carry a big name that are junk. Without a doubt the quality of the Zebco will beat more expensive reels and will last for many years. I have an old original Zebco 202 that still works that I would put up against most of the newer reels.

I agree with LL on the 33's. I still have one I bought when I was a teen and it landed every fish I hooked while using it, and still works. I don't know if the newer ones are as tough but, for the money, they were virtually unbeatable.

Stay away from the new 33's for anything but part time bluegill fishing. They are not the same as the older ones. They have one little brass gear and everything else is plastic. I have about a dozen Zebco 33 reels but for the kids when they come fish at my pond and maybe bring their friends.
You don't want your girlfriend to get discouraged about fishing right off the bat by getting her some junk. One thing you might try is to let her use a spincast or spinning reel and maybe even a baitcaster. I've seen girls that wouldn't have it any other way than to learn the baitcaster.

Guess I can't go wrong with a zebco. I looked at the Rhino's yesterday at BP and they look futuristic compared to the old 33's. Lookin at the ugly sticks also. Looks like a decent rod for the money. Thanks for the help.
