Looking at a boat ...

I would say Joey at chatt. marine. Things to have looked at is motor compression, you want all cyl. to be close within 10% of each other, and I would want the compression to be over 100psi. Also another good one to have pressure check is the foot. Don't want any leaking fluid here. Also check the gearbox plugs for metal shavings and end play on propeller shaft. Check for cracks in the transom, don't want the motor to fall off with the back of the boat. Some thing syou have to except with buying a used boat, carpet not to good, some guages not working things like that. But don't skip on the first ones I talked about, those could be costly to repair.emoSmile

most places will charge between 40 and 75 depending on where ya go , but be sure to have what he (above) said checked out , anything more than about 10 pounds per cyl, differance is bad ...

Any auto parts store will have a compression guage for around 25 bucks. Just see or ask how much compressio you should have and check each cylinder.

After talking to you tonight though...sounds like it is smooth as can be but thats one test you really should do Chris.

If you do these test yourself, Compression should not be 10% different in any cylinder as said before. Take the kill switch off so the motor won't start, this is important for both the motor and your safety. I would take it to someone if you are not comfortable doing these test yourself

How do I I find Chatt. marine? The guy selling the boat gets his boat serviced there, and that Joey guy knows his engine. I just need a phone number.

706-891-9921 this is the number for chatt. marine, the 10% on the cylinders is just a general rule, if it has more it doesn't really mean this one is bad bad, it just has more ware on the piston sleeves. This test will also very from start to finish because the motor is cold, it should be warmed up first. some walmarts sell the compression testor for around 19.99.

Thanks alot! That Joey guy knows this engine,so I just decided to get the whole check up done with him. If the check up goes well,as am assuming it will (it runs great in the water) I will more than likely own a "new to me" boat this week.emoDance

It does have it. It is a Johnson ficht faststrike motor. All I have read about the ficht is terrible!! Yet all the complaints were when they first came out in 97/98. This engine had the "recall" part put on it back in 98 and has never given the guy a single problem. That is why I am so nervous . I ran the boat, and I ran it hard in rough water and the motor starts everytime and never missed a lick. I just think it would be wise to let the guy who has always worked on it take a look at it.

Chatt. Marine is just off Mack Smith Rd. between Ringgold Rd. and Cloud Springs Rd. Joey is very thorough and will shoot you straight about the boat. Just had my boat in his shop last week and was very pleased with the result. Boat runs great and the price was very reasonable.

Anyone know what time Chatt. marine opens? I brought the boat with me to work so I could drop it off this morning,it's 8:30 now and there still isn't anyone there.

Fishinvol,
What about that boat? Got it checked out yet? If the report is good/bad, I will take it off your hands for the price you paid for it!!!!emoPoke emoSmile
Get that thing out on the water and do a little fishing!
How's that precious Maddy doing?

Just saw your post. You've probably already got your boat checked out sorry I missed you. I'm sure the boat checked out perfect. I believe the boat that your looking at belonged to Ronnie. I talked to him a week or so ago and he mentioned that he had someone looking at his boat.

In the future if you need any help give me a call. I open at 10:00 am Mon - Fri ,sometimes I'm a few mins late if picking up parts in morning or sometimes testing a boat. I'm usually at work till 7pm sometimes later. If you need to call you can reach me almost any time on cell# 423-443-6247 unless I'm a sleep or sometimes I don't answer when fishing (can't blame me for that)
