Looking at buying a boat, any advice?

Be patient and buy the most boat you can afford. DON'T rush and buy something because you want to fish this weekend....BIG mistake....Also get the newest boat you can find.

I'd shop around. How's your credit or how much can you spend? New is always better, with warranties and all.
When they talk about it sitting around I'd have to ask -how long?

Garage kept or left out in the elements? Tons of questions. Hurry up and find something before the "spring prices" hit. Good luck!

I'm not going to rush anything, I already have a small boat we use every weekend, just ready for something bigger, something my son and I can fish tx's with. My credit is good but with the economy like it is I'm staying away from any payments, just something I can pay cash for and not have to worry about, plus we plan on buying a bigger house once school is out so I wanna keep my credit clear of any debt. My boat now has a 70merc and it's been great for us, so I figured I'd look for something with either a merc150 or 175, are they both good motors? I'm more worried about the motor having issues than the boat. BTW, i'm looking at something in the 6 to 8k price range, maybe a little more but not much.

Thanks again guys!

those are about the best riding boats out there i hear.dont really know about the price but if u like it make sure u get it checked out good before u pay for it.

have a compression and leak down test ran on the motor first.contact wrechin2 on here and he will tell u what to do.

Champion is a good boat and mercury is an awesome motor the boat looks pretty good in the pic but pictures can be decieving especiallywith boats

It's a decent drive so the owner is going to take a bunch of large up close pictures of the boat, i've got a few other ones i've looked at but so far they haven't been in the best of shape....we'll see how this one turns out.

Thanks for the feedback!

IF it is a EFI 175, the sitting for 2 years would scare me. I would send the injectors off to be cleaned and flow tested so you don't end up buying a boat and 2 weeks later drop several thousand in repairs. Any of the 150,175 or 200 mercury's are good engines as long as they have been maintained.

Here's what I think is a pretty nice rig near Knoxville, found it on Craig's List. There are 3 pics of it on Craig's List Knoxville.

I got found one I'm going to get on Friday, it's in S.Carolina, paid a mechanic to go look at it yesterday and his exact words were hurry up and buy this thing before someone else does. It's a 92 Stratos 274 with matching Johnson 150 Fast strike. It's owned by an older guy who bought it new and has only used it a couple times a year, it's been serviced at the beginning and end of every season since new, has all paper work. The mechanic said it looked like it had been sitting in a show room for the last 15 years, he did compression test on the motor and the guy took him out for a spin on Hartwell, he said everything is as good as a new boat.....I guess i'll find out tomorrow, i'll post pics this weekend.

Thanks again for all the advice! Can't wait to take this thing out this weekend, if you see a white and black Stratos with a goofy guy driving with a grin from ear to ear stop and say high.

I disagree with getting the newwest boat you can afford - that's not necessarily true. Look for a solid boat and don't worry about its age. Look underneath for knicks and scratches that go through the gel coat, look for transcom cracks, etc. and don't buy those, but the boat hull itself is just fiberglass and one that has been taken care of can be an excellent buy. Nice thing about boats - they can be totally rewired, re-carpeted, re-motored, new everything and these days, at the price of a new one, you can do a lot to an old one for a whole lot cheaper than buying something new. I know guys get tired of me hawking Bullets, but one of the best hings about them is that the basic hulls have been the same for nearly 20 years (mine's 17 years old and looks better than many that are only 2 years old, and yes, I use it a lot). Find a well kept 20XD or 21XD and you can get a fine boat at a super price. Redo anything. Mine does not have the original intstruments, is on it's second Mercury outboard, but still has its original lightweight OMC trolling motor that I have repainted twice just to keep it looking fresh. Haven't replaced the carpet - doesn't need it yet. AM planning on updating all the electronics this springif I can ever decidewhether to go Lowrance or Humminbird!
