I am looking for a spark plug removal tool for the poorly designed 2-piece spark plug in my 2004 F-150? I would love to borrow or rent one from somebody.

Patrick, I have "rented" tools from Advance. They charge you full price for them, but when you return them you get a full refund. Pretty handy in a pinch. ;)

Just had mine changed in my 07 f150 450.00 plus 100.00 for each plug they break. Glad they only broke one plug in the truck. The other one Ford broke was in my rear. What a crap design from Ford.

Call advanced auto. Just changed my coils and plugs sat. on my 5.4.plugs had 108,000. Took every precaution and all came out fine.

The trick is too park the truck hot, turn each plug a 1/4 turn then spray PB blaster in it, then tighten the plug back. Leave over night and in the morning they will come out fine. I do these all the time and they were a poor design that let carbon build up on the lower part of the plug and snap off when pulling them. Ford's way to make money off of you needing to bring it to them to get fixed...... I would stay away from that style 5.4 liter. All 5.4 have back cyl head gaskets problems also.

I have a 5.4 L that I am getting ready to change the plugs in and had heard the storys of the plugs being a nightmare to get out so I talked to my father-in-law and brother-in-law they run a auto machine shop and ask the best way to take them out here is what they told me. First get the motor to operating temp then start on the back cylinders when you get the plug wire off spray the pulg with WD-40 or something like it, tighten the plug just a little bit not to much or you will stripthe threads out, then back it out. Check to make sure that you did not pull the threads out if so then you will need to put a healcoil in to fix it. That is a whole new set of problems and tools needed to fix. My brother-in-law said if someone comes to the shop that wants the plugs changed he charges $2,000 if it is a 2004 and up 5.4L due to having to pull the head to fix these plung when they break off. He did say there is a tool to get those broken plugs out but it does not always work. He said overhalf of the $2,000 is for parts.

One thing that I will add is that I ran two full tanks with gas treatment/injected cleaner thru it before starting. Just to make sure there was no build up on bottom of plug. I used blaster. Spray and let sit. Biggest key, don't rush it.

I used Advanced Auto and they appear to have done a great job. Changed all the plugs and replaced one coil. I waited too long, and we had most of them break, but they got them out and replaced at a fair price.

Good to hear. How did you know only one coil needed changing? I just changed all 8 and got it over with.

I have a 2007 F-150. 68,000 Miles on it. Out of Warranty as of October 2012. It goes to Ford today to see if they want to step up and replace the engine! The 5.4 has oiling issues so it seems. My motor is SHOT! Im not a happy camper this morning!!!!

Good grief, what a bunch of BS! I hope they can get to the bottom of this.</p>

They did and stopped making the 5.4. They went back to the 5.0 If Ford won't step up I'll ask the dealership too...if they don't then I'm screwed. Ill need atleast 4 Grand for an engine. Not to mention ford looses all our business, personal and company. We shall see.
