Lowance GPS and SD cards

Guys im kinda looking for some help here, I have a lowance Lcx-18c and it can take two sd cards.
1. Lowrance web site says I have to update the software on my unit to 1.8.0 to run the newer sd cards. anyone ever done this before?

2. There are many map programs out there, I was kinda looking at the fishing hot spots pro but can anyone tell me if there is one that I can "modify" on my computer... ie ad markings things like that to?

3. Can I take someone elses map card and copy it to use in my unit.

1. Yes it is very easy to update the unit. You need to go to the Lowrance Marine product download page and download the proper update. It will give you instructions on how to update the product and just follow the directions on the screen. One thing to remember is to download the update to your computer first then it will ask you where you want to save it to in the screen that pops up. When you go to update the unit, make sure it is turned off and insert the SD card that has the update on it. Then turn your unit on and it will automatically update and then restart once it is finished.

2. We have had Navionics cards on our last two units and they are awesome. We have the platinum now and the detail that it shows is almost too much. I haven't used and of the Fishing Hot Spots but I hear that are nice as well.

3. You WILL NOT I repeat WILL NOT be make a copy of the Navionics cards. When you try to make a copy it will automatically delete the information on the card and then you both will have to buy new chips.

Thanks for the reply, I guess I need to go out and buy a sd card reader and a card so I can put the update on it as I dont currenly have one. Im curious about the map create software, from what I read I might be able to do the modifictions to the map that im looking to do. ie draw hidden ditches and things like that in.
