I went to the bass pro shops in atlanta on saturday and got a 522 there was a lowrance rep there he said that they had alot of the problems fixed with the 522 losing signal . Was just wanting some of yalls info on this unit . I have 30 days to return it .So help me out with some info

i have a 522,got it last year for christmas.and have been happy with it until this week.saturday when i went out it took for ever to get position.and today it would never stay locked onto a signal, all day it keep losing its signal.i didnt know they had a problem with the 522.i was just thinking today was a freak thing going on.but until today i had been real happy with the unit.

I had heard there was a problem with them losing signal fairly easy since it was an internal antenna . So I asked the lowrance guy and he said that they had worked alot of the bugs out of it .

Since my wife won't let me upgrade my boat, I was thinking of getting a 520? Would that be a good choice, or does anyone have any suggestions?

I have the 520 and I've never lost signal. I've only been on Chick and Nick since I got it though. I suggest getting the extended mount. It allows you to change the angle and turn it around.

If you are going to flush mount it in the console I would recommend a 52O with external gps rather than the 522. I think the only difference is internal versus external gps antenna. I have been pleasantly surprised with my 52Oc. I'm hoping to get one in the console of my new boat but I don't think it is going to fit.

I recently installed a 522 (internal antenna) on the bow. It's tilted back for easy viewing and I haven't lost signal yet on Nick and up river to Raccoon Mtn. It is recommended to be mounted vertical so the antenna is not blocked. I plan on moving it to a vertical position on the console and putting a 520 (external antenna) on the bow so I can mount it flush in the original switch panel. I don't know of any problems with the 522 as long as it is mounted at the proper angle.

Blazer, I just got mine. I've fished with a friend that has had one for a year or so. The only time his lost reception was when it was tilted too far back (bow mounted) and once he sat a large tackle bag close to it and it would lose reception while traveling a certain direction.

According to the Lowrance site, you can use an external GPS module, LGC 2000 or LGC 3000, for the antenna on the 522. The internal antenna of the 522 can be disabled using the menu.

I may run both my 520 and 522 off the external antenna of the 520 if I have any reception problems with the internal antenna of the 522.

I'm not gonna hit the panic button on my 522. GPS manufacturers are always making improvements to antennas as the technology becomes available. There will always be some geographical locations with poor reception, and newer and better GPS satellites are ahead.

I have the 332C ,which is just about the same thing, and have had to download an update or two. I know one was for the external antenna. Easy from the Lowrance website.
If you keep having problems you might check the website and the techs on the phone are great...and in Oklahoma !
I put mine in my truck and took a 8000 mile tour of the west and only really lost coverage in the Redwood National Park.

Good info Snuffy. I downloaded the latest software version, 2.1.0, from Lowrance and updated mine before I installed it. It was simple.

I've had my 522 since last spring. No problems so far. It is mounted at that console. Just purchased the hotspot chip, and was surprised how accurate it was.
