when i bought mine i checked with cabelas and they told me you can get it with either one, bass pro just shows it with transom mount.i wouldnt suggest mounting it on the front of the boat because when you tilt the unit back so you can see it,you will lose your signal on the gps..unless you order an external antenna to connect to it.i called lowrance to see if an external antenna would work and they said it would.....if you are buying one new i would suggest going with the 520c regardless were you are going to mount it.

Thanks for letting me know about that antenna. I can get a 520c a little cheaper anyway. Thanks!!

I have just ordered a 522 because of the internal option...If you way point from the front of the boat you will be more accurate coming back to a given position. External antenna have the same problems as internal if something or someone get between the sats and the receiver you will experience signal loss. External ants. are just one more thing to step over, another hole in the boat, and something else to hit when you flip....I have worked with both and would and will chose internal hands down to external ant.

If you decide to go with external...you can run the cable out the hole your engine cables enter the hull and using a piece of sticky double sided velcro.....the connection is about 10 inches from the puck so you can remove it with velcro and stow it away. I mounted mine between running light receiver and the hole where the wire comes out. With 20 +sats to choose from I`ve never had a problem with reception.
I believe I read somewhere that the slower you are moving the less accurate it is , so chances of hitting the spot are probably about 30 feet anyway...it`s normal +/- error factor. If your getting WAAS coverage maybe 10
