Sure is, I would like to upgrade, and think its a smarter way of doing it. You can get a good unit and then when you decide to upgrade and have the money purchase the si part. The hummingbird don't give teh option really its si or nothing.

I'll have to wait and see what the $$$ is which will determine how quickly I upgrade. I really like this new HDS, but it's driving me crazy. I'm spending more time trying to find fish than I am fishing!!!emoBang

By the time you get done buying upgrades you will have spent way more than if you'd have just bought the 'bird IMO.

The only "tiny" advantage might be theat the Lowrance 2-d might be a little better.

That remains to be seen. As I understand it, the upgrade will involve software/firmware upgrades and an SI transducer. That theoretically shouldn't cost a significant amount. Lowrance dealers should have a chip that allows them to update the programs (or download them like the Navionics firmware), so the cost would only be for a transducer.

I was wondering how long it would be before the Humminbird snobs showed up....about 3 posts longer than I thought.
Let the games Begin !!!!!!

All jokes aside though, if/when Lowrance puts a comparable product at a better price than HB, I would consider jumping ship. Lowrance already has several advantages over HB. For instance Lowrance uses NMEA 2000 versus HB's antiquated NMEA 0183, which makes interfacing with other componenets and different senders difficult as well has newer programs capable of interfacing with laptops. Im not sure why HB didnt go with NMEA 2000.? .? For what its worth, before I owned the Humminbird, I owned two Lowrance units, and had very few complaints, as a matter of fact I prefered it over my Humminbird unit I had at the time. But hey it's all in fun I guess. For you guys sake, I hope any upgrades for the Lowrance SS is dirt cheap. IMO everyon can take advantage of bottom imaging. emoParty
