Lately my 97 225 Mariner Super Mag has been stalling when in gear and idling.. I am thinking fuel filter, any thoughts?? A couple of times it has also just cut out on me when running around 4500 rpms.. Does fine at WOT.. Again I suspect a fuel filter. Any help would be appreciated.

NITRO7 - 3/11/2012 7:33 PM fuel pump mine was doing same thing would run fine wide open throttle but would not idle for extended period of time

I would agree iot might be a weak pump or something caught in the check valve. Does it seem to idle real rough? It could have a hole in the diaphram flooding one of the cylinders. A Fuel filter will generally cause WOT issues as it restricts the fuel flow. But it could be a lot of things from a double firing switchbox, idle stabilizer gone bad,to a ECU issue . EFI adds a lot more possibilities. </p>

It seems to idle smooth but when I put it in gear after a few minutes of idling it sounds as if its not getting enough fuel and stalls. Not all the time either. Could this be a possible bad stator issue??

Does it fade out or stall like you cut the key off? Does it restart quickly? Do you have to pump the bulb to get it to restart? A stator if going out will usually drop 3 cylinders and will hardly run IF you get it to restart. Very rarely does a stator come and go.

I fades out like its starving for fuel.. It restarts just fine. It only fades out when in gear.. If it is just idling in neautral its fine and if I give it just a bit of throttle its fine. A couple of the times when it died while running around 4500rpms then it was like I cut the key.. Way back when I first got it there was a problem where it would just stall while running. Found out the problem was in the plug on the engine where the wire harness from the boat connects. I wonder if that could be acting up again??

Update!!!! So when this problem happened 3 years ago the problem was the electrical plugs where the boat wiring connects to the engine. Remembering what the mechanic who fixed it told me I simply pulled the connections apart, the pins and sockets did have some good amount dirt and grease on them so I got my handy electrical connection cleaner and gave the pins and sockets a good spraying and wiped where I could, one of the plugs has really large male pins. I let the cleaner dry and again wiped what I could and put everything back together. Took it out this afternoon and she ran PERFECTLY!!! Never hesitated or missed or shut down. Its good when its an easy fix like that.
