A local shop has a 135 Mariner with 150 hp carbs, he says making it esentialy a 150hp. I am not familier with Mariner at all. What should I know? I understand it to be about mid 80's to early 90's. Thanks guys.
Mariner, merc, evinrude, yamaha and/ or johnson they're all going to blow sooner or later. My best advice would to be check compression, hours and lower unit. I bought a 175efi merc that was four years old from basspro a few years back that had good compression and the lower main bearing went out 10 months lateremoAngry . who would have thought?emoScratch The best thing to do if you fish alot is to buy one with a warranty if the budget allows it. With the $$ I've spent in repairs in the last seven years, I could have bought a new one by now. I would be leary of one that has been altered. but that's just me. Good luck with it.emoThumbsup
I can only say that I ran a 1982 40 HP Mariner for 23 years solid before I bought the new G3 w/Yamaha. My Mariner worked flawlessly all those 23 years... and last I heard the gentleman from Paducah, KY who bought it said it was still purring like a kitten. I can only hope the Yamaha will perform as well.
Not for sure, but I believe the 135 is the same 2.0 litre block as a 150, so it would not be hard to upgrade carbs to make it that way. I have a 90hp inline 6, and it is the same as the 115hp inline 6, just a different size of carbs. It is best if you can take the heads off and look at the cylinder walls to see if there is scarring, also check for play in the piston, It should be tight. Compression numbers don't always tell the real story.
I AM JUST WONDERING HOW MANY OF YOU GUYS SAYING TAKE MOTOR APART AND LOOK AT IT DID THIS WHEN YA'LL BOUGHT A MOTOR. THE MOST YOU CAN DO IS CHECK COMPRESSION ON ALL CYLINDERS AND CHECK WATER PRESSURE AND END PLAY ON FOOT. IF ALL CECKS OK THIS MOTOR SHOULD BE FINE. AS OTHERS HAVE SAID IF YOU WANT ONE WITH WARRANTY BUY ONE WITH IT.
I did it and Nichols(board sponser) let me do it. I did bring my own Merc mechanic, and my own head gaskets in case I did not buy it. They were pretty sure of thier product and I have no doubt Nichols is a reputable business. We checked the ring keeper pins, and cylinder walls.
I just hate for anyone to get burned buying a motor. It happened to me, and it really sux to have spent all that money for something that does not work.
