emoGeezer A lot of retired and eldery people may be on the brink of going North from the Gulf of Mexico, along with a few million other men, women & children, with their pets & livestock in tow.

Desalination is the process of turning salt water in to drinking/palatable, safe water. I don't know the number of water treatment plants along the Gulf Coast or along the East Coast of Florida, (Gulf Stream) but there are many.

Benzene (google it) is a chemical found naturaly in crude oil. It is very toxic! It is carcinogenic!
Water treatment plants CANNOT filter this chemical out of water, especially salt water.
See the picture? It could be the worst migration since the 1930's dust bowl days, Grapes of Wrath,
a movie depecting the migration of people from dust storms & The Great Depression.
It could get very scary in a few weeks, and then again I have been wrong, a few times.

God Bless America, and Deliver US from Evil.

hmm, very few desalinations plants in the US. Tampa Bay does have one as does El Paso, Texas, but most of the rest of the Gulf region gets there water from groundwater.

Benzene (and other petrochemicals) are a real threat to public drinking water, however that threat is greater from the fracking of natural gas wells which are located in about 1/3 of the US. The chemicals are injected directly in to the aquifer.

Agree. Ground water, lakes & rivers are being tainted daily, with runoff, natural gas wells, dump sites and spills.
I think there are about 1000 desalination plants in Florida & the Caribbean, from what I've found.

Defracking has been going on for over 100 years in the oil business. Just another fear tactic from the enviro wackos. Don't put too much stock in what you hear in the mass market news and print.

Kool-aid anyone?

more like 60 years, however the high-volume horizontal processes used for natural gas is new, along with the cocktail of petrochemicals that they dump into the aquifer.

Here is a good link from the EPA regarding the hydraulic fracturing process and results they gathered on groundwater contamination - you be the judge:

Yeah that study is on coalbed methane, we are discussing natural gas in mostly shale formations. Different geology, different fracking techniques, for a different hydrocarbon, in different areas. emoSorry Try comparing apples to apples next time.

The root of the discussion is drinking water and its possible contamination. What do you propose we do to solve our energy needs? I'd really like to hear about that. All I have been reading is a bunch of gripes and not any solutions. Now solutions - you can take those to the bank - gripes anybody can do that.

Efficiency improvements! Double auto fuel mieleage. Build thermally efficient houses. No bright green watered yards in the desert. Decent mass transit system.

Bubbakat, beetlespin is sending you down the correct path. Green energy is not just wind or solar, but also smarter use of existing energy. Pump storage facilities (like Raccoon Mtn) to utilize nighttime excess energy and then release during daytime when demand is higher, hydrokinetics (either ocean wave or river currents to power turbines without the use of dams), Passive solar such as planting an oak tree to provide shade for your house in the summertime.

Electric powered bass boats - we can recharge them off-peak. Dang it that would mean no more night fishing - forget that suggested solution. emoBang

I built an Energy Star Certified Home, and my utility bills where: $57, $73, $59 the last 3 months. Oh yeah, that includes, water and sewer. I believe in building them, but it came at a premium price

I have done several upgrades to my home to make it more energy efficent. Different windows and doors. I have a timmer on my water heater. I am also looking into other ways to cut back and I can already see the results from my upgrades.

And do you really believe that the energy companies want you to save energy, what a crock. Every time you save money, they lose. Ethanol products were made to compete with gasoline, made for a cleaner energy and bring gas prices down because of less demand . I see the prices low, hea right. All I see is gas prices going up and so is Ethanol fuel and corn...... By the way , you will be paying the same on your Electric bill you paid before you made those improvements or upgrades. They will raise the rates to make up for the lose. I build a energy efficient home and it cost me $100,000.00 more than if I didn't. I saw my electric bill low for the first year, but it's up now.

Triton is right. The utility companies have a payroll to meet, plus benefits, + retiremnt benefits, and some are stock companies that pay share holdes.etc. They either make payroll or start laying off employees, thus raise your rates, whether it be TVA, local companies or private utilities.
Talk about fracturing! a bubble has raised the ocean floor about 10 feet x 2 miles, around the "Deep Rig Drilling" platform. If this is a methane bubble, you won't have to worry about benzene in your drinking water, just deadly air you breathe if you are a Gulf Coast resident.
If the bubble in the earth is a gas bubble, and it does blow out, all ships in the area, and drilling platforms will automaticaly SINK, no bouyancy. Can't swim in a gas bubble either.
Keep your eyes open and listen between the cracks in the news. Several scientist have tried to get a copy of the "mud logs" from BP, to give this more study, but to no avail.
And I'll have another kool-aid, or as it's called in the military, "bug juice".
