I took this nice buck last Tuesday. Not sure what he'll score into but so far estimates have put him between 135 and 145. I'm not real sure on all that stuff but I know he's my best buck to date. He's a nice 10 point...measured him with 5" bases and he just has loads of mass. Not real long tine length though...his G2s are just 11" and only sports an 18" spread. Them folks from Iowa would snurl their nose at him but I'd shoot him again any day of the week.

I too would have shot at him! I probably would have missed, but glad you got him. Without more angles, I would guess him between 125, and 135".

I killed this 9 pointer also in McMinn a few years ago. I had it scored over in Nashville. It went 125" 5/8. It was my previous biggest buck. In comparison to the 10 pointer, the 125 is sorta on the dinky side. LOL. The 125 nine pointer doesn't have mass but it has good tine length. The 10 has A LOT better mass and 3" longer G2s on both sides. I don't really know much about the scoring; it's really not that important to me but everyone wants to ask the "what'd it score" question. I only had the 9 scored because I had entered a big buck contest and they were scoring them there. I got 2nd place with him and won a whole truck bed full of Trophy Rocks. Pretty good prize too.

Here's a in the shop shot of the 10.

WOW, super looking deer from years past too! </p>

Mass is great for the score, but it takes a lot of antler length to get to 145". If you want a rough score, measure each tine, the total length of each main beam, and the inside spread, let me know what you come up with. Again...SUPER deer...both of them. I would be a happy camper!

Hey CHurly, check out the tarsle glands in that last pic! The rut is here in his area!

Yes sir! All indications show that peak breeding occured in SE TN over the last two weeks, except in the mountain areas. Although a doe could pop into estrous anytime until new year or even later. I have noticed that there are more and more quality deer coming from McMinn and Monroe Counties each year. I believe that the residents of the area are learning the value of passing up small bucks!

Beautiful buck Daniel. Like Spur said mass does not count for all the much on the score. Tine length, main beam and spread are what adds up. I would be proud to shoot that guy no matter what the score. I would guess from the pics that it is 115 to 120 class.

RE: Rut

I've been in the woods nearly every day for the last few weeks. Well except on church days and such. But from what I've seen and personally witnessed, the rut has been very delayed and I've still yet to see much sign of it really kicking in. The 10 I killed was with a doe. He wasn't chasing her or anything but he was with her. That week I saw several small bucks cruising and only one little spike that was dogging a doe.

BUT since then, every doe I've seen has still had little ones with it and showing no signs of starting to come in and for real no chasing of bucks. Usually you'll see some stray bucks on our trail cams that are cruising for the does but we've not seen that much so far. Matter of fact, most of the other hunters I know are struggling to see deer right now and most of them seeing deer have been during mid day. I'll put it to ya this way...I sat in one spot Saturday morning last week and saw 7 does. I have hunted all this week of ML and I've not seen the first deer.

I have noticed that also Daniel. Very few deer spotted in the early morning and late evening. Not a lot of rutting activity. The buck I shot was at 2:10pm and he was alone. Haven't noticed any of our 'regular' does coming into estrous yet.
